I didn't see a "hey newbies, post here" section, so here I am!  I am very happy to find this site, and I hope the picture shrunk down to not be an obnoxious size.

This 190xt has always been on the farm and has been a great worker.  My dad died last October, and my husband and I are now running the farm (along with my mom).  Since Dad did all the equipment maintenance, this has been a learning curve for me!  I'm hoping to restore her at some point but have a problem.

Long story short, here's my dilemma (and please forgive my non-technical names for things) - the PTO broke, as in I was slowly pulling up on the knob to engage the PTO and next think I know, it's no longer attached to the tractor.  It appears that the rod linking the bar to the housing sheared off (that's my totally novice eyes looking at it).

Is this making sense?  Am I up a creek as far as repairing the PTO?

I have a 200 that is very similar to your 190.  If I am reading your post correctly, it would seem that the shaft that the pto handle is attached to has broken / sheared off where it goes into the console.  Either way it sounds like the pto linkage has broken somewhere inside the cab or console.  It should not be a hard fix I would think.

First, welcome to the Forum. There's no "newbies section" because everyone is welcome - as are their questions. Second, from your post it sounds as though one metal part external to the innards of your tractor broke away from another, also external to the tractor. I know nothing about 190's but I'd generally agree with island200 - sounds as though someone with a welder could fix your problem, but I'm not sure. Bet you get some more posts with more information.

That XT is an early old girl. I tried to look at picture under belly to see if it had hydraulic lines to the front of pto housing. I could not tell.  So I must ask/ say if its hydraulic engagement pto, there will be a lever on the side of console. Could be as simple as a roll pin broke in the shaft that the lever is attached to. I have had to squirt oil down inside to lube the detents.  Follow linkage, it will go down to a valve under the floor boards on the right had side. A pin could have dropped out there.
   Now if you have a lever that you have to lift up coming through the floor boards at left side under seat, or a longer lever that goes forward/backward to engage and disengage on left side, just take battery box access cove off. ( Left floor plate). Had bracket come loose off transmission once and it flopped around. If this isn't the cause, follow linkage forward to see if lever behind battery box that actually engages the pto is attached. If lever is broke, weld quick and cool with water and then weld for another couple seconds and cool again. ... But if everything moves up to and including the lever on side of housing, then you have to get in through the 2 spd hand clutch cover (on right hand side of housing, torque tube) and replace a roll pin inside housing.  Don't know how hard it is in 190 but did it to 175. fairly easy to drive roll pin out opposed to putting the roll pin in. So use a shear bolt for a 273 NH baler in that spot and it should be fine.
 
 
 Just reread your post, "I was slowly pulling up on the knob to engage the PTO and next think I know, it's no longer attached to the tractor.  It appears that the rod linking the bar to the housing sheared off",  I am assuming you arte talking about the handle on right of you, on side of console.  Get somebody to weld handle back on and go back to work ... but lubricate the detents down inside the console so it won't have so much resistance after its welded so that it doesn't break again.
...But if its the knob that you lift from the floor, then investigate to see whats wrong and  second paragraph from top would apply.

It looks like the rod going to the PTO is hanging down in the photo if you look at the left rear wheel you can kinda see it.  I'm thinking the rod just needs welded back on going into the housing.  Good looking early XT, looks like it has the light axle's and interchangeable front end also.

Thanks for all the responses!  Here's a picture of the bar/shaft hanging down - you can see at the bottom where the rod sheared off flush against the shaft.  Also a picture of the housing.  I'm still looking for some diagrams of what is inside the housing to figure out how things work in there, so here are my next 2 questions!

Question 1 - Since it is all flush, both against the shaft and the housing, is that weldable? 

Question 2 - what's the chance that something inside the housing "blew up"?  Or is more likely that the rod just sheared and a weld will fix it?

I would guess that your lever just broke.  The proper fix would be to split the tractor and replace it, but it can be welded.  You will have to drill out what part of the shaft that broke off in the lever hanging down,  weld a small chunk of shaft on the shaft that is broken off, then weld your lever back on.  There is an O-ring that seals on this shaft and it might leak some oil after welding on it.  I can get a part break down later if needed.

That's what I thought might need done.  I googled for a diagram to see what's in the housing, with no success and didn't see anything in the owner's manual.  Of course, I could have looked right past it, as well.

 Heres what I would do... I would drill the shaft out of the lever and place lever up against the shaft in housing. Then grab a wire feed welder and weld two tacks (one top , one bottom) to hold the lever. have a water hose close by an cool it down. Then weld it hard on one side and cool with water to touch, Then weld other side and cool down again. - Spray the water on back side to cool it so housing and shaft get the cooling and possibly save Oring.
What have you to lose?
  I had a hydraulic lever break off on pump of WD45 and I welded it righ where it was and used a jar of water to cool. Had only stick welder and had to knock sl*g off each time too before proceeding with another 3 second weld. - That was 20 years ago.
