Predictors............ I know one that's ALWAYS true....when you see horsetails (a certain cloud formation) it's gonna rain within 24 hours. I know there was one about the temp and the amount of times a cricket chirped. There were ALL KINDS of nature/ weather predictors from those old timers years ago. That was how they became successful farmers. Do you know any of them??

Ring around the moon it's going to rain. How many stars in the ring is how many days. 6 months from the first thunderstorm is the first frost. Poplar leaves silver side up, going to rain. The length of the light brown segment of the wooly worm is how long the mild spell will be in the winter. I've heard lots more...just drawing a blank right now.

The cricket one: The wife told me that one time. Back when we were living in OH, it was hot, muggy, nasty and we were trying to sleep, windows open. Damn cricket right outside. She told me that saying, I don't remember, something like count the chirps in a minute and maybe add something or not and that's the temperature. Huh, OK. A minute later I said to her, "It's hot out dear, but I don't think it's a 134. "

Don't plant your tenders( toms,peps,beans) until 3 days AFTER the bridal's wreath spirea blooms. Late farmer told me that, he's been right 100% of the time for 30 years.
I'm guessing spirea KNOWS when there will be no more frost ? All I know is he was RIGHT !

if the big dipper is tilted like your are pouring it's contents out, it will be raining here within a day. we also watch the animals and birds. if they are gorging themselves, the weather is gonna be some kinda nasty real soon, they are filling their bellies so they can stay in from it. same with horses or cattle or other 4 legged critters, if they are antsy and jumping around, the weather is gonna change real soon too. and if it's real foggy out in the summer, count how many nights/days of fog, that will be how many snow storms we will get thru the win ter.

Mom and dad could rattle off a whole bunch of those sayings. We always cut hay by one of dads sayings. Ya once in a blue moon we got wet hay. I can't remember his saying, that's probably why my down hay gets rained on quite a bit.

Bubbles on the puddles are a sign of rain within twenty-four hours, and it works nearly 100% of the time.......... There is a scientific reason for it......Same for if the smoke drifts almost flat with the ground and don't raise, it will rain!

Tbone's rings around the moon works,and so do the rings around the sun,,,,,,,,,,, but they are harder to see. And if you see a shiny spot, knida luminescent or different color and usually a bright spot on each side of the sun,,,,,,,,, those are called sun-dogs and are almost 100% accurate!,,, it will rain in 24 hrs..........

If you split open a persimon seed and see a fork or spoon one is a mild winter and the other is a hard winter. The time I spent in Colorado as a kid my dad told me that when you see the hawks gathering in the fall you are two weeks from first frost. Here when we start seeing lots of trantulas crossing the road we are a few weeks from first frost. I know this one to be true. Last time I went out west coyote calling I found that if we followed the farmers almanac fishing schedule we had good luck. If I were ever to go back and do this again I'd plan my trip around the Almanac.

With Easter just a week away. I anticipate the "Easter Spell" will bring us another frost . Anybody in NE-TX whose livelihood revolves around the weather believes 100% in "The Easter Spell" Early or Late Easters makes no difference.
The wife and I Honeymooned in Florida after getting hitched in Chicago on April 14, 1962. Never forget scraping frost off the windshield of my 1960 Stude Lark V8 Hardtop in Silver Springs Florida. Waking up to a Frosty Windshield in Florida in the middle of April. That was what Texans call "The Easter Spell"
