 Topic: 1980 AC 7080 Power Director?

I came across this 7080 advertised. Says it is a 1980, but the cab picture shows both a console power director shift lever and the old type shifter on the floor between the legs. What could possibly be the story on this tractor? Converted to old style shifter? New cab - old tractor? Looks solid otherwise. Just curious.

Thats a black belly so at least a newer one, the decal on the console is a later one like on the 1980 models i have. Ive heard of guys having trans trouble and putting the old style shift in when they fixed them

My guess is that someone either didn't want to fix the twist shift, or didn't know how to fix the twist shift, so they put in an old style stick. Personally, I would have fixed the twist shift.

Talked to the owner. He bought it from the neighbor who is the original owner. Says it is in good shape. I asked about the shifter and he said the transmission output shaft broke so they found an old style transmission and put it in. Also rebuilt the HI-LO power director when they were at it. My question now is: can the old shifter be converted back to the console T-Handle without swapping transmissions? Also, engine has never been touched except for injector pump rebuild. At around 5500 hrs, what should be done to the engine? Harmonic balancer replaced? In-frame under-haul? Thanks in advance for any help!

That would be the first 7080 ive heard of that has that kind of hours and not had the engine worked on. The one i have is on its third engine with 6000ish hours. I guess watching my father opening it to full throttle after the last overhaul might stand to reason for premature failure....

If it ever served as a loader tractor, I would have switched it in a second, leaving the console shift alone. Running the gear selector with the left hand, while the right hand is used to operate the loader is hard to beat. When I run our 7060 PD loader, all four appendages are in use at the same time often. When approaching the hay grinder for example. Left Foot on the clutch, right foot braking to a stop. Right hand opening the grapple, and then once stopped, left hand shifting to reverse. Very very easy to run.
Or it could just have been an easy fix to a worn out linkage!!

The transmission cover needs to be changed out, should be able to find the parts needed from a salvage yard.

Personally, I wouldn't have a loader on a power director, power shift for me worked better, wheel loader even better still.
