    Posted: 16 Jan 2017 at 7:06pm
First off, I would like to say how much I enjoy this forum!  I have recently acquired a 1972 Allis Chalmers 200 tractor from my father-in-law who left it set in the back 40 for years.  I drug it to my shop and started playing with it here and there and have been slowly trying to fix things that don't work.  On to my problem...The headlight switch was bad and someone pulled all the wires off it trying to troubleshoot itDead..I bought a new switch and can get the lights to work, however,  the way it works I don't believe is right.  Does anyone out there have a wiring diagram for this switch, my I&T manual is marginal at best and doesn't show the switch very well(or at all).  Any help you guys give is appreciated!  Thanks in advance!

Jared

Sorry I can't help you with your wiring issue, but I have to ask : Just how nice is this tractor, because it is probably around 45 years old, and if it's been sitting for 40 years, that would mean it only has about 5 years of use on it. I don't own a 200, but from what I hear about em, I desperately want one. Darrel

I read it that way first as well, but it says it's been in sitting in the back 40 for years, not sitting for 40 years.

The owner's manual (not I&T) has a wiring diagram at the back.  That should be able to help you out.

Thanks for your reply Darrel.  I don't really know much about the history.  it was sitting in the pasture before my wife and I got together in 2007.  it was parked because the brake spring broke and one brake kept locking up! then the reverse shift fork got broke ram-jamming the trans trying to unstick the brakes.  I got it, put a starter on it, cleaned the fuel tank, repaired a fuel line, and have slowly been un-cobbling everyone elses "fixes".  the hour meter shows around 3k hours but the father-in-law couldn't say if it worked when he got it or not.  he bought it in the 80s, was the discing tractor for a few years till he found a 400 loader to put on it, and it's been a loader tractor since.  it starts and runs good but smokes pretty bad (fuel...think injectors need rebuilt).  typical farmer loader tractor....every panel is dented and lights broke out.

Go to AGCO Parts Book and order one. They are very reasonable.

What about the light switch and wires makes you think something is still not right?

Do yourself a favor and cut the resistor coil off the back of the switch.

Please explain the benefits of cutting the coil off. I need to rewire two tractors.

The switch doesn't change continuity between low and high beams. The same terminals have 12v on low as well as high , the new switch looks like the old one, can't compare continuity since the switch was open on all terminals.

I think my three were around that for my 175. AGCO does us right on the books for sure.

The resistor coil is used to obtain "low beam" on the first position, and also glows a dull red hot and will melt insulation if it happens to touch it.  This will make the first position flashers only instead of low beam and flashers.

This helps A BUNCH, however; my machine is an early serial number machine with two headlights on each fender. This gets me in the ballpark, and is a much better starting point than I had before
