The Kohler K301 in my 712H wont start, I have fire to the points but the points wont fire, does that mean the points are bad?

They might just need cleaned up. Take some fine sandpaper to em.

I tried that, and they fired 1 time then no fire again.

is there power to your coil? make sure your battery wire from key or on - off  switch has power

I found trouble, it was just a corroded wire.

I learned long ago to replace 100% of the wiring on 20-30-40-60 year old machines.... Odds are real good MORE than ONE wire IS corroded....
If you cut the wire, strip and see 'blackish' copper wire not shint clean copper, replace them all. Moisture(water + chemicals) has 'wicked' into the wire. It's only a matter of time before 'funny things' happen or 'it just dies'.
To virtually eliminate that, before you put on a connector, slide 2 pieces of heat shrink tubing on the wire, then after you crimp on a connector, solder the wire to the connector. This fills in the wire strands makes it solid. Now slide one HS tube back over the crimp, heat and shrink.let it cool, then pull the 2nd one over and heat it. Done right the 2 layers of HS will make the crimp/insulation area waterproof.It also strengthens the joint ,so less chance vibration will damage the connection.
