 Topic: 180 vs 185

I remember reading in here that the difference between a 180 and 185 in hp is in the fuel system. What is actually different is it just setting on the injector pump or do you have to swap the injector? Just wondering because one neighbor has a 185 and another has a 180 and the one with the 180 has commented several times that he wished he had as much hp as the 185 and he recently rebuilt the motor in his 180 so I wondered if it could simply be adjusted for mor power.

the 180 rated load was 2000 the 185 was 2200 and had an auto timing advance system on the fuel pump - there were some gears different in the 185 as well in the torque housing.

Not even an expert on this but weren't 180s 2800 engine and early 185s too? My late 185 has 649 engine so I think different injectors, at least that is what I have been told.

you can turn diesels up but some times it comes with a big cost later on down the road.

Think the 185 has one less tooth on the pinion shafts that drive the bull gear in the finals. The neighbor could just put the manifold and a turbo on his 185...

The early 185 pumps had no timing advance, later ones did, but later 180 did too. Like TBran said, 2000 rpm for a 180, 2200 rpm for the 185. The fuel injection pumps a very close to the same, other that adjustments, and the injectors are the same up through the 190 non turbo. 190XT through 7060 use a slightly larger nozzle in hole size. Of course the latest 185's had the Bosch injectors from around 1980.

We always replaced injector tips as a whole set and used the larger 7060 p/n tips. Works just fine.

yeah, but that also made a tad more smoke. We did that to a few and old (now late) Joe Dewane came unhinged on us on a visit to a problematic 7000 once and caught us red handed.... wrote down the sn and said he would not pay any warranty.... many years later we laughed about it...

I guess I am curious about my 185. By the serial number it is a 1979 model. The engine tag states the engine is a 649 model. At what year did this engine have the Bosch injectors? I also own a 7000, and by the serial number it is also a 1979 model. The engine tag states it's a 2900 model engine. Did the 7000 ever have the 649t installed or only the 2900?

The 2900 VS 649 is just a name change to the metric designation, to sound more modern for the time. The Bosch injectors didn't necessarily come at the name change. They were a little later. The name change came really close in time to the black chassis tractors.

15561 was the cut in for bosch injs unless someone put the bosch field kit on...
7000's all had the later engine - part of the upgrade for 105 hp,,,-145 hp for what it was worth. 649-639t-649i were the last 301 designations. also many 180s were turned up to 24 00 hig idle - then they had a 'flutter' due to late inj timing. When the pump was advanced to cure the issue - then it would not crank - thus the difference in fuel pumps as Ed stated as well..

Just for reference, here is a picture of my father's 185, Serial number 15616. These are the Bosch injectors. What I've mostly heard is that this was a change that wasn't really needed at 185 horsepower levels but since all the engines got the upgrade at the factory, the last few 185's got them as well.
