Check the fluid level in both the transmition and hydraulic section. If the power director seals leak the transmition will be high and the hydraulics low. Also check the front axle rear pivot point. The steering is very strong and that gets a lot of abuse if the tractor is wrestled around a lot when sitting stil. From the picture it looks like a unmolested original. I gave a thousand for my gas one with tires you could see the air thru. I've seen a few for sale in our area usually in the 4 to 5 thousand range.

i would sure be testing the trans for popping out. how slopped out is the 3pt? check the front end for cracks/welds around the back of steering cylinder pretty common. spindle wear/slop. check PD linkage for wear, could contribute to PD slipping if it does.

Looks to have been repainted at least once - orange seat pan and rear work light??? no way!
A couple of tihngs I have learned: 1) Hours on the tach mean NOTHING on a tractor this age. My XT shows 4200 hours but the cable was broken for god knows how long. Tractor actually has a lot more hours. 2) If the owner says it jumped out of gear (a couple of times), it probably means a lot more than that. Remember, he is the one that is trying to sell it. Generally, the bigger they are, the harder they have been used. If you feel up to rebuilding the transmission (and paying for it), then go ahead. With it jumping out of gear and not knowing how good the engine, injector pump or turbo is, I would not go over $2500. |

That's a series 1 tach. My grandfather bought one of the first series 2 XTs NEW and it came with the newer style tachometer.

you are correct on the tach, good eyes.
I've seen a few pictures where the shifter is angled to the back direct to the transmission (Series I?), while this one has the front mount with linkage back to that point. And it seems series III added a cover over the linkage?

Shift lever and linkage should all be the same along with the cover. Only difference I have ever seen is a thicker shift lever which my 190 has, it doesn't get skinnier as it goes up like most of them do.

No, all the shift linkages are the same and have the covers regardless of series. None of the gear shifts were fixed directly to the transmission. |

Update:
I still have not got a chance to see it yet but my brother stopped by and ran it. Engine sounds and runs fine. Shifts smoothly PD engages Low and High Both fenders have some damage to them at the rear Front shroud must have fell off, both clips missing and replaced with a locking latch with snap pins. Slight damage Fuel pump locking wire is missing, pump turned up? In 4th low, at low RPM, tractor seemed to lunge (Not due to RPM surge) during a sharp turn, like it was slipping. PD slipping? Didn't try it in high. Taking off, rolling on fuel and shifting to high tractor did not slip Front right spindle is sloppy. Steering ram connection has been welded. Drawbar hole wallowed out. 3 point is tight. Hydraulic fluid is black. Owner said he had replaced all fluids but within a month the fluid black again. Not sure what this could be? $3500, would not budge price.

It depends what you are planning to do with the tractor. $3500 Sounds reasonable, does not sound like it has any major problems. Many of the things you mention would be common for a tractor that has been used for almost 50 years.
