Hello guy I have a question did the wd45's have different head options?
I got a head off Ebay  it said it was from a wd45 but it's different than the one on mine.
It's shorter I think it's from a Wd can I use a Wd head on a Wd45?
I do have the rocker arms that go with it any help would be great thanks.
Some one put valve seats in my head and didn't do it right the valves stick out past the head.
#3 piston has a spot where it hit the valve but the damage in min.

Most WD's used the short head.  The last year or so of WD production switched to the tall head.  If you have rocker stands, head studs, and a valve cover to work with the short head, it'd be ok to use.

You say the valve seats are in wrong and the valves are sticking out past the head, do they look like this head? If they do then you are OK using your head.

3 WD45's with power steering,G,D15 fork lift,D19, W-Speed Patrol, "A" Gleaner with a 330 corn head,"66" combine,roto-baler, and lots of Snap Coupler implements to make them work for their keep.

here's another angle to supplement Don's pic, the valve heads are not recessed in head. The mark on your piston is another story.

If you installed new pistons, do you have the part number or a pic of the pistons installed in the block you can post so we can see how high they come, I am asking all of this because I'm thinking you might have installed WD pistons and not WD45.

Thanks for the help guys I haven't replaced the pistons.
They are power crater pistons so they are right.
The reason I think the valves are wrong is because the intake valves are flush but the exhaust valve's stick out .
And they pinned the new seats in really badly they even marked one of the seats with a punch.

Bill it's good to know I'm not the last guy out there that still laps valves in. lol

As dirty as that head is, I think you probably got a chunk of carbon behind the exhaust valve that held it open on an exhaust stroke and caused it to hit the piston. The impact probably knocked the carbon out and it kept on going without a problem.

.....and Don, those guys who don't lap valves just don't know what they're missing do they? As far as I'm concerned getting a nice smooth seating valve is one of the simple joys in life! LOL

By the way the head is not dirty anymore.
And Don I did lap the valves on my other head.

I don't think a valve can hit a piston unless something else goes wrong.
 Unless the seats and valves are worn out, the valves should set out side of head.
 Center punch is a way to hold seats in. Not a problem.   MACK

I don't think the valve can hit the piston unless the rocker arm clearance is too tight. By the look of the valve indentation on the piston, double check that the valve head is not bent, unless you installed new valves. On a side note, those are not WD45 pistons, they are D17 or newer, so you have a little more power anyway. I have d17 pistons in my wd45 and they look exactly the same. Good luck with your engine.

 I have no history on this motor at all.
It ran ok with a slight miss but it was burning oil like crazy.
