    Posted: 17 May 2010 at 9:45am

I got my 45 up on blocks in the rear, removed the tires, and started the process of cleaning. Made sure the final drive pan fill plugs would move. For grins I went to pull one and see if I could sample the fluid. Well, pulled the plug and fluid ran out big time. How could the level be higher than the fill plug? Could there be so much thick grime in the bottm that the level rose? Maybe water displacing the fluid? It was a weird greenish yellow color. Panning to pull both pans, clean, check, and then seal back up. Just looking for advise.

Thank Jeff

Jeff, that's an interesting dilemma! Could be draining into the finals from somewhere above.... brake housings? Differential?

Randy...
So how would water get in? Through the brake covers and down the drive axel tubes? Seems if water got in somewhere, you would see a leak in the same spot?

looks like the axles seals and pinion caps are wet with oil.. water might enter here.. also check the bull gear cap make sure its sealed good..looks like to me if the differential is leaking oil it would drain underneath the tractor.could they have been filled on unlevel ground??

If you use one of those hand pumps that go in a 5gal. bucket the tube end is large enough to fill the hole. With it its possible to overfill the housing if you get the plug in fast enough.

There is a hole in the final drive that will alow water to get in if it sits outside in the rain.
I had a wd that was the same way. I thought that the axel seals were bad, but when I dropped the pans they were full of water. Bob
