I posted last Thursday about my WD45's overflowing carb. Pulled it off the tractor today and found no obvious cause. We did blow out the float valve seat and tweaked the float slightly to close the float valve more tightly. Once back on the tractor it performed flawlessly! Thanks again to everyone who contributed on the last thread.
After testing the genny, we pulled it off the tractor today to rehab. It needed a thorough cleaning and the wire to the field terminal was broken....now repaired. Now I am looking for brushes - one is in two pieces! Local parts store says Delco Remy now longer offers brushes for this genny. I believe that the model # is 1101413, but the tag is pretty worn.
I don't have a parts book (yet) for this tractor - can someone confirm the genny # above - or give me the correct one?
Can anyone suggest a source for replacement brushes? Thanks much! Edited by Dave(inMA) - 10 May 2010 at 4:54pm |

Chris, thank a ton for all your work on this. It's great to have those #'s - now written in my operator's manual.
Sometimes even the blind squirrel finds the acorn.... This afternoon I heard about a shop run by a couple of "old timers" who, it is said, can repair any genny ever made. I expect that's a slight exaggeration! But I took my parts to their shop and had 3 brand new brushes in a matter of minutes - $5 for the set. Put the genny together and reinstalled it.
Results - w/o field grounded I get about 3v at high idle, with field grounded I get 20+ v. Not sure this genny is too healthy - I connected it to the battery to do the motor test - it spins but pretty slowly. ALso, when I check voltage between A terminal and ground, I have the + lead on the voltmeter connected to the A terminal, negative to ground. This is a + ground system and we polarized the genny when we did the motor test: - lead to the A terminal, + lead to the case. Does this seem right? I'm thinking I should have the voltmeter leads reversed: - to A terminal amd + to ground. Man, I haven't confused myself this much in a long time!! Edited by Dave(inMA) - 11 May 2010 at 5:36pm |

Gotta say, generators have no concept of voltage, so a gen must be connected to a battery for (voltage) testing. (20 volts open circuit isn't far off.) They are not meant to run open circuit for a reason. That's why you must disconnect the field terminal if battery is not present as internal arcing will mess up things in a hurry. If the gen will make more than your battery voltage, just let the regulator do it's job and call it good. (Unless it exceeds about 10 amps)
FYI, for brushes, any larger size brush with a suitable connecting wire can be filed down if needed. Use a flat file laying on the bench and slide the brush. A little tedious, but doesn't take all that long really and can get you through a pinch. It may take a while to wear the curve to match is all. Useful with old starters too.

Good info. I was running it for a short time with both A and F connections to tractor removed. I am starting to think that my reversed tester leads MAY have occurred because I had them plugged into the tester backwards!! Getting old is not for sissies......... |
