On a 1959 D-17, on the right side axle trumpet is a hole below the brake section. Inside on the transmission case is a pin sticking out. It is about 1 inch in diameter. It has a hole in the center which is threaded. There is oil leaking around the pin. What is the pin for and how can you stop the leak?

Pin is what anchors the brake bands. The threaded hole is to attach a slide-hammer to pull the pin. Good luck with that. Usually though they have a groove around the pin end to fit a puller on. Usually that doesn't work. Anyway the seal in the differential quill is leaking. Have to pull the axle "trumpet" off but first remove the that pin. May have to torch it out piece by piece. cut a chunk, drive it in further and cut another chunk and so on. When housing is off a visegrips will pull the rest of the pin out. Good luck and get a repair manual.

Richard...Are you maybe talking about the pin that holds the internal hydraulic cylinder? It leaks around the pin when the O-ring needs to be changed. Let us know for sure what area you're talking about.  Rick

It has nothing to do with the brakes. The pin is further forward and lower than the brake pin. If it is the hydraulic piston pin, how do you repair the leak.
