Hello all,
I'm currently on the hunt for any pictures, or information, about the locomotive(s) at the Allis Chalmers plant in Milwaukee. I'm a member of quite a few museums, and was doing some research on a particular unit we have and it just so happens that AC purchased new from EMD (Electro Motive Diesel, a branch of GM at the time) a SW1 switcher. I can't seem to find any pictures or much info at all, so I figure this would be the place to come. |

I have never come across a picture of an Allis-Chalmers owner switcher. I do know they would have enough business to switch 24hrs a day, but I assumed that the C&NW or Milwaukee Road switched the Allis works. Although I did find history on a SW1 bought by Allis in 1947 as #8, owned by ILSX recently.

I googled Allis Chalmers rail road switch engines-there is a picture of a wreck that involved 2 steam engines 1 was apparently switching at the plant. In other posts there are very interesting paragraphs on stuff AC made that I never heard of. This is probably not what you are looking for but I thought it was interesting.

According to Wikipedia, only a single SW-1 was made for Allis-Chalmers, road number 8. Here's a pic from another web site:

Would need to see s/n of the engines to know if not the old Allis unit. Lots of engines have had major mods to keep them viable from arch bar truck replacement to the road lamps seen on the 904(they are not OEM)
and such else equipment as the sun visor for the yard unit where the 904 unit would have no need of.
