I have a 848 coming in and would like to see how you guys have them setup on a 226 engine. I remember it being mentioned that the arm has to be modified to be exact like a 464 carb has. Any internal mods to the 848? |

There is a bigger venturi available for it, but I'd use it as-is first, and see what you've got. It is very important to get the throttle shaft lever length and indexing correct. It is also important to have a good straight (no drooping)gas-line and 5 gallons of fuel or more in the tank, because this carb (as-is) normally has a fuel pump delivering fuel thru the needle and seat, instead of gravity alone. Needle and seat hole is the same as the TSX464 needle and seat. Main jet will probably need to be adjusted to proper performance.

Finally mounted the 848 on to my WD with a Z code motor.
It has to run at a high idle (like 1100 rpm) to keep from needing choke. Below that it needs about 1/4 choke. Not sure the reason for this. I have the load needle adjusted about 3 turns from all the way out, this was the setting that would allow it to run 1100 and up RPM. The air screw is about 3 turns out but it does not seem to have an affect on things if it's out or in. I measured the same distance as the arm on the 464 and drilled a hole but didn't take into account that the arm is pointed down on the 464 and the 848 it is up. That makes the throttle rod (Or governor rod) level whereas it was angled down on the 464. So what happens is when it stumbles the governor seems to over correct the amount of rpm needed resulting in a surge. Not sure what will happen when I put a load on it. Running it around the yard it is very snappy and I only get dark fuel smoke when cracking the throttle. The 464 seemed to have dark fuel smoke most of the time as I think it was getting more fuel than air ratio even though it ran smoothly. Any pictures out there of your throttle arm so I can see how you have it set up? |

The idle mixture screw should be approximately 1 1/2 turns out from bottom as a rule. Idle speed is 400 to 600 RPM, not 1100 rpm, so the idle mixture screw doesn't have any affect at 1100 RPM, because the engine is running too fast. The throttle arm orientation should be like the TSX464, with the air inlet facing the rear of the tractor. If you choose to have the air inlet facing the radiator, you're on your own. Black smoke usually doesn't make any more HP and usually less.

I've never tried to make the throttle butterfly work bass-ackwards like that, and don't know how that affects your idle quality situation, but would suspect it could be negative. Your lever looks a bit too short, yes. The WOT stop/idle speed screw lever needs to be pulled off the shaft and turned around the other way so the throttle plate can operate like intended......control arm down.

Also, a procedure I always do, loosen the idle speed screw several turns, close the throttle butterfly completely shut in the bore and then and only then, tighten the screws that secure the throttle plate. This centers the plate in the bore to prevent sticking when in the idle position. It's just one of those things I automatically do when performing carb work that isn't written down anywhere.

I took off the carb and will try your setup. Need to switch over the gas line side, what holds the id plate in the other inlet.?

Thanks for your insight DrAllis, I switch the arm around (Made a new one) and changed the butterfly as you suggested.
Started right up and idles fine. New arm works much better (smoother RPM changes)
