Put one in my WC. I'm trying to get all I can or of it. I have pertronix ignition, coil and wires, rebuilt carb...tsx853. Seems tuned as best it can be but it's never enough....ideas?

Unless you have a dyno to actually measure current HP and then "tweak" from there, you are urinating into the wind. Ignition timing set to 25 degrees BTDC at wide open throttle is all the better ignition timing can be. Open the main jet on the carb an extra turn. Adjust valves to proper lash when cold. Use good gas but NOT racing gas. THERE IS ONLY SO MUCH YOU CAN GET, AND THAT IS WHAT THE FACTORY RATING WAS. You want more HP??? ..... you need a BIGGER carb, more compression, a different grind camshaft, more cubic inches (bore or stroke or both).

I understand the later pay off what you said but like most guys I don't have lots of money to throw at an engine. Just doing what I can to get the most out of what I have will give. I have a tsx864 off a D19 and am told it'll hurt more than help.

Well you know what, I'll bet if you actually try that D-19 carb on your engine, and you'll leave it on there. Unless this individual has been-there-dun-that, he just thinks he knows. If you are running at 2,000 rpm or more you will LIKE the D-19 carb if it's adjusted right, but hey.....you're the Boss.

No, I'm inexperienced with these engines and am looking for advice. I have to make an adapter because the carb flange is much larger on the D19 carb and I need to rebuild it. I can run over 2k rpm's but tend to be under that. Most places I run 3.5mph topcut class which isn't easy with a WC with 13.6x38's on it. I need low end...it honestly need gearing. I think an RC rear or underdrive would help keep me in a happier rpm range but again, I'm just learning like lots of guys

D-19 carb can be mounted using 5/16" bolts, nuts and flatwashers and utilizing the slotted holes already in the carb. Much easier and CHEAPER than swapping a rear end. You're the loser if you don't even try it.

boy… "Dr." Allis i think YOU'RE the loser for being such a prick in your replies. nothing you said provided any help or information at all. Instead of belittling people in your comments why don't you put that vast knowledge of yours to work and explain what experiences you have had. thats what we are on here for. Or just don't say anything at all. That works too if you don't have anything encouraging to say.

And you have a nice day too !! I've actually done this carb thing more than once over the years, so I feel somewhat confident in recommending it. The loser comment wasn't personal, just a fact that the tractor will probably lose less with a larger carb on it. What wisdom can you add here?? Maybe you shouldn't have said anything??

If we can get back on the subject........................I'd like to ask if there is any advantage to the bigger carb if you CANNOT rev over 2000 RPM.  Most of the places we pull (Gleaner Z, totally stock, in a WC) we're limited to 700 PTO RPM.  That puts us at about 1700-1750 engine RPM.

The same pulls also limit us to 3.5 mph, and with stock gearing and 38's we're very close to that at the same RPM.

I'm wondering that too. Around here no one cares much on rpm's but it's tough to break 2k rpm's pulling 3.5mph with 38's

Same here on the lower rpm question. My wd will do a little more rpm than a wc for the same speed.... was thinking of the d19 carb myself

These may be a bit big or at the the Stromberg is but I'd sell these. One I haven't found a name or tag on and the other is a Stromberg SF -3. It's big. Came on Mack and IH trucks.

Too much carb to move the air at low RPM?

I'm just guessing

It's gonna be a pooch with that wheel/tire combo, 14.9 X 24 or 14.9 X 28 is what it was designed for..... unless you make 80+ hp, 38's are for show.

I would agree it will be underpowered with 38" tires but I will disagree on that 80+ hp needed for 38s. I have two WCs one has 15.5 and the other has 13.6 which are about a inch taller then my 15.5s and pull up to 4500 class and spin out. And I have no where near 80hp. The one with 13.6/38 has high crop gears so I pull in second then drop to first for the 5000 and 5500lb class. And I like to think I do pretty good for a 2800lb tractor pulling against weighted Ms and Gs. I would try that d19 carb if u have it. I run a tsx848 off a d19 on one of mine if u don't like it your not out anything.

ok I also don't agree with the 80 hp for 38 inch tires I switched from 18.4 26 to 15.5 38 on my plain wd and am doing a lot better now reason I switched 2 gear at 3.5 mph a lot of times if the track has any bite by the time I start to spin the motor wont come back up if I run 1st gear I am 3.5 mph wide open I switched to 38 and now I'm just a little over half throttle in 1sst gear and always come on up on rpm from there
