 Topic: d17 gas tank question

i've developed a fuel leak around the gas gauge on the fuel tank. is there a gasket that goes in there? it's also stuck on about 1/4 tank, so i might as well fix/replace while i have it apart, so is there a common problem with these? i know the gas gauge issue has been addressed several times before.....but, what the hell, i'll ask too.

Yes there is a gasket there. Just pull the 4 bolts out and have a look at the gauge. All it is is a float on the end of a rod with a couple gears. The needle is completely sealed and is moved by a magnet, no mechanical link between the inner workings.

I had a similar situation... leaked around the gauge, and the gauge wouldn't come off of E.
Pulled the gauge out, and found that the cork float was more like a brick of shellac.
After hunting around a bit, I realized that I had an old gas tank given to me by a buddy that does demolition derbies... think it came out of a early '90's Crown Vic.
Yanked the top cover, found a nice styrene float in there... bent the shaft straight, pulled the float off, trimmed it a tad (bandsaw) and stuck it where the AC's cork used-to-be.
To seal it, I slathered a little Permatex Form_a_gasket in it's place. Should'a used real gasket material, but I didn't have any on-hand, and it was winter, and I needed to get it goin' again... figured I'd only run it up to about a quarter tank, so as not to create a leaky-mess... but she's holding, and the tank is full!

sometimes if the cork gets worn it will ride up and down on the rod, and the gauge will read empty. Other times, the gears in the middle can wear down and get stuck causing the guage to stay at a certain level. Mine was stuck at 3/4, but there was actually less than a gallon in it.
I found a good used one out of a wreck in the tractor grave yrad.

well i guess once i burn enough gas to get below the gauge, i'll pull it out and see what i have......or, park it facing down hill, but using it sounds more fun.
are new gauges available? i have a few new gauges (oil, temp, alt) in it already....the tach and gas are my ugly ones.....seems like a good time to pretty-it-up if they're available w/out breaking the bank.

Skip. My d-14 's gauge was doing what yours is. I got a new cork (big) at hardware store and dipped in shelac several times and let dry between coats. As for the gasket I made a new one and used gaset shelac and reinstalled. Gauge works like a new one. Have a good day. Gary

Gauge is 70229188 retail is $109.36 Canadian
Gasket is 70228119 retail is $6.03 Canadian
Both parts still available from Agco and a number of US dealers show having them in stock.

Stan, the 170 is different. It has an electric guage. D17 is a mechanical type.

I had a gauge custom made for mine from a company we order propane gauges from. Reads really pretty close to where its supposed to be. The mount looks slightly different, but it works and seals good (I replaced the flat gasket with an oring). The gauge face is not correct, but I was looking at a 200 a while back and noticed that the gauge face off of it had the AC emblem (or name can't remember) on it and it would unscrew and screw onto mine. My cost was $60 if I remember correctly.
