Hello,
First off, was there a sickle mower ever made for the 900 series garden tractors? We have 3 900 series tractors and want a sickle mower for one of them.

Either way we want a sickle mower for a garden tractor, so one for a B series that anyone would have for sale would be considered (we have a few B series but they need a lot of work before  a sickle mower could be put on). Our D17 with a sickle mower is to big in most of the areas we need it for and a garden tractor with one would be perfect.
 Thanks for any info/leads

They made one for the 710/712/716 with a planetary gear reduction. It was no longer offered when the 900 Series was developed. I've heard of some people using the 700 series sickle on the 900 tractors but you have to use a longer belt and rig up a mounting point for the support chain and cable pulley bracket.

Thank you mowerguy, that clears up a lot of things. It doesnt sound too hard to make one work, the problem is is finding one, i've been looking for one for 2 weeks and havent come across much. We used to have a 712 but the tractor got parted out because it was wore out from being used every day to feed calves for over a decade. two of our B series just need the engines rebuilt and I can use one of them with the mower.

I had a pair of them, and recently sold the better of the two.  In doing so, I went ahead and set it up on my 917H so I could troubleshoot the adaptation for the buyer, who was also planning to use it on a 917H.  Here's what I came up with...I did drill 1 hole in the frame for proper cable lift pulley mounting.  Otherwise, I simply replaced one of the carriage bolts that mount the LH side running board, with a longer one, so I could have room to bolt on the rear hanger.

I used a Simplicity model 990785 RBT sicklebar (3400-7000 Simplicity series/700 AC series) as well as:
**7100 deck lift cable (you could make one)
**rear hanger from the FDT (since they are easier to find, you could make one easily)
**pulley/bracket from the FDT (since they are easier to find)
**Belt is 1/2x73" (I think for the 700 series, it's 2" shorter).

Here is an image from the 990785 manual, showing a 3400/7000/700 series:

Rear hanger view from beneath tractor, just inside the frame, using running board bolt:

Rear hanger view from LH side of tractor:

The shiny carriage bolt head is the one I swapped out:

Front cable lift pulley bracket mounting position...there is an existing hole in the frame that I used, and when I mocked this up, I felt lift height and drop below grade (for mowing ditch bank) were appropriate based on cable length and bracket position.  The bracket has 2 sets of adjustment holes for pulley position, and I used the front set.  A little bit shorter cable would work fine.  I can measure cable length and hole position if you need for reference:

Ta-da!

I am now needing to complete the restoration of my second sickle, so I can actually use the thing on my ditch bank.  I have the 917H on mowing/vac duty currently, so I may use the 7790 diesel as my sickle machine. Embarrassed

Currently 'getting by' with the trusty '64 Landlord Wink

I hope this helps...when I searched for info, all I could find in various forum archives was folks asking how to do this.  I probably should have posted this without being prompted Confused

I looked for much, much longer...a year and a half or so?  In the end, want ads found me two of them, two weeks apart.  I had found one previously, but the guy wanted a grand, and that's just too much.  I then had a fella find a real rough one, but I have been able to save it.  The bar was in the air, but the lower pulley in the drive was disintegrated from being on the ground.  The tin is crummy too.  Shipped, it was $175.  I have around $35 into a belt and replacement pulley.  Luckily, I saved the planetary (it was seized up solid).

The second one, and the one I just let go of, was found by another local collector who got in touch with me.  In order to fund other projects, I listed it for $550 and had payment that very day.

Several years back I had one, but back then had no late model machines to use it on.  It also sold Day 1, for $600.

For a guy seriously looking, I would say to take a good hard look at anything under $750.

Wow thats incredible information there mrgreen, that really helps a ton. My dad has an Allis 917, I have an Agco 918, and just recently got a Deutz 914. It would more than likely go on the deutz, but it doenst have hydraulic lift which would be a pain lifting it up and down a lot. Thats another reason why it would be great to put it on one of them, they are hydrostat drive and that would be much easier to use than the gear drive B series we have.

So the sickle mower has 2 cables to lift it up? And would the reason it takes a 2 inch longer belt because the frames are longer on the 900 series than the 700 series? Watching that video really makes me wanna find one now but have only seen two on ebay and they were in wisconsin.

Are the sickle mowers for the B series much different than the ones for the 700 series? I am wonder for if I find one for a B series.  Thanks again, it was a little hard to put all that info together being I never messed with them before on a garden tractor.

The sickles for the RBT's required the planetary assembly to slow them down as the drive pulley is significantly large on the cone clutch compared to the mid-pto pulley driving the FDT sickle.

I have also found the planetary type to run much smoother. Its a joy running it on a hydro/hydrolift.

This is an update to this old post. By chance and a long time waiting we found the correct t sickle mower about 40 minutes away in excellent shape and the guy sold it to use for a killer price. That's my dad in the video at my parents farm. Thank you to everyone that has given info on this!
