    Posted: 16 Apr 2010 at 4:53am

I just have to give an update to a problem I can't solve, but I'm getting ready to go into the weights...I ordered a stock WD45 governor spring in an attempt to get my high idle below 1900 and still retain my full range of throttle and it is actually worse!  Right now both of my adjustments (carb side and throttle side) are as per specs and my high idle is 2250 with a stock 45 governor spring (white stripe) from AGCO.  This all began when I realized my pulling tractor couldn't open the carb wide open because I was adjusting the high idle on the carb side, which I can still do but when I get the high idle down my carb cannot open fully because the rod is too short to allow it.  When I make the rpm's work on the throttle side, I have 1.5 inches of hand throttle range tops!  I'm suspecting the weights are too light, too heavy, wrong or broken in some way.  Wanted to thank those of you who have helped me in previous posts...just wanted to vent some frustration.  The old spring, by the way, had an opening in the coil like it had been stretched or something and the plunger inside was an 1/8 inch smaller in diameter than the spring, what gives?  It looked longer and broken compared to the new spring.

If you have a broken gov wt ant the hard metal piece falls down into the timing gears you are going to have a major breakdown. Pull gov and check before this happens. Bill

They was a post with pics of a 50 wd . yesterday of the magneto and gov linkage. the verticle rod comming up from the turn buckle that pulls youre rod that goes to the gov. backwards is the rod not letting you have full  hand throttle movement. its on page two under my ac project the rod is right behind the oil filter and runs verticle. if you broke a gov . weight as soon as you moved the throttle lever off idle it would rev as HIGH AS IT TAKES BEFORE IT BLOWS with no control what so ever in the hand throttle..

But, 70229519 is the correct p/n for a D17 spring regardless of what color it's painted.

According to the allis manual the wd @45 is red striped. If pulled to 3 1/16 inches long at full throttle it shouldnt give no more than 1722 rpms at high idle.

As usual, you guys are the best at finding the information.  I have a pull next weekend and I'm looking into the weights this week.  Hope to find out what is wrong early so that I can order parts as necessary and install prior.  Just a question, is there a possibility that the carb linkage (at the carb) could be my issue?  I'm running a Zenith.  I believe I know the answer (no) but it's worth a shot.  Right now, my high idle is 1870, my carb side rod is adjusted per specs and I only have 1.5 inches of hand throttle travel to keep my high idle at this speed.

one more time the hand throttle not being able to be pulled all the way down is the promblem . Its all  at the bellcrank.

MlPankey, please understand sir, with all due respect, I have manipulated this bell crank every way from sunday!  (I'm gonna need some new little set screws for these rods by the way!)  When I allow the lever on the governor itself, regardless of how it is pulled or pushed with the rod on the throttle side, to move rearward towards the driver more than an inch (half the allowed travel of the governor rod) my rpms at high idle go to 2100+ and the same is true with the new spring ( I mean this new spring, despite it's different appearance and condition)!  Believe me, I need the help and I didn't want you to think I wasn't listening to your advice from 4 days ago, but man I've tried everything!  When I set the rods on the bell crank per the manual and your identical advice, I get 2100 rpm's.  So I make the rod on top longer (as per the manual to decrease high idle rpm) or screw in the lengthened bolt in the top of the governor, my hand throttle travel is affected by shortening the radius it can travel.

the short verticle rod is the one thats keeping the throttle from moving its full range. the set screw on it should be almost to the end of the rod

I think your gov . weights will be ok .I usually sling a set a year and as soon as you loose the weight you know it engine revs till valves float and throttling down does not  do anything.

your gov is worn out. all the pins and weights are worn. its hard to tell with the naked eye. I had a ca that was worn out and put a washer behind the thrust bearing and it works fine real snappy. its all mechanical so the washer took up the slack in the pins and weights, from years of wear.

orange power that may be the case . that he has to much play in the pins and bushings. but i have never seen a 201 ,226 gas style gov . be as snappy as the smaller series engines either such as the c b ca d12 thru d15s.
