Finally got the right side clutch pack out of the HD5G.I pulled the tin plates out that I had stuck in on each side, then I took the blow gun and blew all of the crap out of every where. I stuck the blow gun into the Oval holes on the back side of the brake drum also and I think that may have allowed the clutch pack to go into the brake drum just enough farther to give me the room that I needed, because then it pulled right out. Yeah!!! Congratulations!! I know it feels great to have a trouble like that and get past it; after all, I just finished up rebuilding a.....Ford 8N....recently. It's a pretty simple tractor, but sometimes I'd just like to knock Henry Ford upside his head!!

Well, got the right hand clutch most of the way apart. Broken springs, broken spacers, fiber discs and steel plates are all shot. The left hand clutch assembly is going to fight us even harder, I think, because it was the side with the missing cover. I can't get the clutch pack to budge towards recessing into the brake drum. I oiled er up good, and will try again maybe tomorrow. Did notice on the right side, that the hub that bolts onto the brake drum, and drives the final drive, is aweful loose. Is it splined or something? I see there is a bolt in the center of it that has a locking gizmo on it. I haven't tried to do anything with that yet. Darrel

Now that you have the clutch pack out make note on the inside of the drum. There is a thin place in the drum at the base of the spline for the frictions. When it is impossible to move the clutch pack into the drum you cut thru the drum at this point.

As to the loose hub: both side hubs are splined.

What parts did you get a price for. Rebuilding your steering clutches I would think would be a lot less then thst un less you hire it done. Do your home work, use the net, ask for some phone numbers from the guys on here. It can be expensive. I belive it was general gear in south Dakota where I got mu clutches for my h4.

I have a bunch of fiber discs and a few steel plates . 
Yes the hubs are splines and yes they can wobble some even though - mine have been doing it for 40 years now and still turning . 
 Check for USED parts to rebuild clutches - either stock or HD11 bi-metal parts . 
Some of the fibers I have are worn some but most show no wear.

Parts I priced out were all new semi-metallic discs, all new steel plates, new springs, and all new brake bands. I realize that used parts can get the job done, and I haven't ruled that out, but I want this clutch job to last to the point where my son (senior in high school) never has to do it again. There will be plenty of other areas of it for him to work on! I did make some headway on the left side clutch pack. We filled that compartment with diesel fuel to about half way point a few days ago, and let it soak. Today we rolled it ahead so that the bottom half of the clutch that was soaking in the diesel fuel was at the top. I put my home made clutch pack compresser on the top side, and it moves inward. So now we are going to let the other half soak for a few days, then roll it to the top, and hopefully we can get the whole clutch pack slid into the drum, and get that bad boy out of there. Darrel
