Just wondering what kinda power you would get out of a 301 GAS if ya bored it ta say 4 inch and strocked it ta say 5 inch in the xt they were Rated 77 hp draw dar just thinking out side the box

Why don't you bore to 4 1/2" and change connecting rods and stroke to 4 5/8" which makes 440 cubes.....been there...dun that. HP is mainly determined by carb throat size.

You will not make a 5 inch stroke fit in a 301 unless you use Briggs and Stratton connecting rods. Then it still might not fit.

had one taken to 5.25 stroke with continental rods with angled caps,( was a project motor I finished that was started by Bob Sharpe), with billet rods like marties with a tighter angle cap would make it easier. things get really thin inside, and clearances where very tight at that stroke. 5" would be a lot better

I stand corrected. Shows you how much I don't know.
None the less, if 400ish cubes is the goal, I wouldn't bother stroking the crankshaft. The cost of the crank and billet (if you go that way)rods would not be cheap. If you have a bearing failure it will be expensive to fix. The head (with the gas head being better than the diesel flow wise - but still not good)will only flow so much and if the stock intake manifold has to be used the extra money spent for the last few inches would gain little performance and be better spent somewhere else. If money and time aren't an issue and more than 400 C.I. is desired, then stroke away. My personal opinion. |

I completely agree with you. the motor was a half done project someone else started, I felt it left a lot to be desired the way some things where done inside. if my memory is correct I think the rod journals where under 2" even. like you said, you can only pull so much through the intake anyway, and at low rpms it did ok. if I was starting from scratch it would have been shorter stroke, a larger bore then it was, and a fair amount more compression, it was a 8:1 settup.

The one I did, had Buda rods and even with those I had to grind flat spots on the camshaft to swing by. A nice set of custom offset rods would have been nice, but 4 5/8" stroke would be the max without welding on the crank.
