416 Rebuild

It has taken some time but we have finally started re-assembling our 416. This was an Ebay find I bought for $150 for my sons and I to rebuild. We mowed with it for a year before the engine demanded a rebuild so we decided to completely redo it.

Slowly getting her back together. Last week we got the transaxle bolted to the frame and installed the new electric lift.
Friday I got some color on the hood and wheels but there was a problem with the paint so I will redo it this week. The engine was back in the frame yesterday for the first time in three years which was a great feeling. This week I'm ordering the front tires and maybe next weekend she will be standing on her own again.

looks good we do them big or little they all have four wheels and hoods and fenders ect. they all take alot of work but it sure is worth it and you will use this every week thats the reward

Where in the world did you find a scraper like that? Lucky dog!

I bought the scraper and a weathered but barely used sleeve hitch plow for $100 at a consignnment sale about three years ago. It has the wrong size wheels but everything else works. Look up Soilmover on youtube for some neat videos of the scrapers in action.

Sorry but I think I will keep it. With seven GT's in the basement I can always hook it to something. I plan on playing with it awhile then I'm going to sand blast and paint it. I figure it will always be the only one at the show.

I finally got it wired and everything but the headlights working wich is a ground I need to fix. The front tires are on as well as the rear fender. I'm hoping to fire her up this week or maybe the weekend and start all the adjusting I know she will need.

I love those front tires! Will have to get a set or two of them sometime! It's looking Great! And its Great that your sons are helping and learning.  

Forgot to mention about the front tires. They are pretty nice! Gets the Tractor away from the old knobby tire Garden Tractor look. Looks more like a large Tractor. I ordered the same similar tread design to put on the front of my 620.

Thanks for the comments! HudCo it is a 416S the S means it has the shuttle transmission. You have four gears on the shifter then the shuttle lever to the right of the steering wheel. Push the lever up to go forward and down to go backward. In the middle is stopped. Basicly four forward and four reverse gears.

Steve the best I can find out is the 400 series started in 1973 after replacing the 300 series and ran for nine months. There were two models the 410 and 416. I have had people tell me there was a 412 and 414 but I have never found one and none of the Allis Chalmers literature mentions them. They dropped the variable speed tranmission and replaced it with the shuttle and they also had a hydr version. When Allis Chalmers settled the anti-trust lawsuit with the feds they closed the South Carolina plant and all production moved back to Wisconsin based on the Simplicity lines.

I knew about the listing in the operators book and have had this discussion before. A couple of people have told me they thought that because of the short production run few if any 414s made it off the line. The reasoning behind this might have been the 10 and 16hp engines were the most popular engines at that time and they concentrated on those in the begining of production. I have never found a 414 but would LOVE to have one in my lineup.
I think the next Allis after this will be a yellow one or one of the 900 series unless a 616,620,or 720 finds me then all bets are off,lol. For now the next ones to be restored are three Cub Cadets,they keep finding me;)I love all garden tractors but I bleed orange and creme!
