If you use it only for pulling and rules allow it, water injection will help.

Spray windshield washer fluid into the turbo as far away from turbo as you can get. Rig up a nozzle to spray 12 ounces in 30 seconds to start. Too much will bend connecting rods.....start with 12 oz in 30 secs. Put a switch on the throttle so it runs on the juice 1 inch before full throttle. Always get out of the throttle just before you stall it to prevent water logging the engine. We used to stick a windshield washer tank inside the air cleaner body....out of sight.

Actually I broke my boost gauge before last pulls so I don't know what it was running. Ed set up pump and injectors and it runs strong.

Well more than likely you are out of the compressor MAP of the turbo with getting that hot. Also you've more than likely have melted the divider and the exhaust wheel of the turbo getting that hot. I would recommend atleast a hx40 with the 10 blade turbine and the 60mm inducer.

Or go with a Borg Warner turbo in a comparable size. Pushing anything over 40 psi is just blowing hot are into the motor.

I'm only turn 3000 rpms it would have enough to spin a hx40. Nothing melted still running fine. How are guys keeping them cool with a 450 head.

Advancing timing 2 degrees at a time will help, BUT there is a point of tooo far advanced.

Keep it simple. Add water injection if allowed.
Advanced timing may cool it off a little. I would not go past 38 degrees and that would be if you have hardened connecting rods. Before you go changing exhaust housings it would be good to have peak pressures on both he intake and exhaust sides. The HX40 may be too big with a .390 pump at 3000 RPM. In theory the larger exhaust wheel on the 40 would reduce exhaust temps. There are three different exhaust wheels for a 40. Again in theory a .450 pump may cool it off too. More fuel = cooler exhaust temps IF you use the same turbo. You may have to use a larger exhaust housing to keep the turbo from over speed / over boost as more fuel will drive the turbo harder. Shoot for 1400 - 1500 peak degrees max. Edited by O.P.S. Heads - 29 Nov 2014 at 8:35am |

Water injection works for me. I have a pressure switch in the manifold that will turn on at a preset boost and shut off when below that.

I'm surprised you're not having trouble with the head at those temps

I have never seen a 301 puller (with original AC pistons - not aftermarket) melt the tops of pistons due solely because of high EGT's. They will crack heads and drop exhaust seats (if used)like there is no tomorrow as Slade said.

I was wondering if some of it could be a false reading maybe some fuel ignite in exhaust manifold.
