The Smokin Assets team had a misfortune of splitting our 2nd block at Louisburg Ks on Saturday night. Jason's wife Traci was driving this time after being out of for 2 seasons and was on a killer pass when it let go at 235 ft when it let go. Not much salvageable from engine. It even got the injection pump and all the aluminum sheet metal. Very thankful no one hurt. It even popped the grade 8 bolts on the external tie bolt system.

To bad, hate to see people have problems, especially of that magnitude. On the bright side though it's nothing time and money won't fix.
What are they running for a powerplant? |

I was there. It let go about 20 feet in front of me. It went "bang" big time with lots of fire....I would be willing to bet more than one of the fans around me filled their shorts when it let go!

I saw the videos on FB, and it was not a pretty thing to see. I have seen this tractor run, and it put down a pretty nice pass. What are your plans now Jere? I saw the gov housing was broken, but I'd be the pump can be rebuilt with a couple new housings for the governor.

Yes, with todays custom billet chargers you can easily get intake pressure of 200-250 with a 2 stage 3 charger system. There are quite a few single charger diesel tractors making over 100lbs. As for farmtoybuilders assessment of exceeding the limits of the little 301 engine, unless you run an aftermarket block [JD & IHC], all blocks can and will split thru the cam area when boost exceeds 200 lbs. If you youtube you can find numerous videos of such explosions of JD and IHC. We made a policy to always run ours as hard as we can each and every time we hook to a sled. That is what a light super stock is all about.

The big question I have now. After taking off 2 years are they going to rebuild or what. And what can you do to fix the problem. And what is done to hold it together in the first place. Besides girtle, deck plate?

the driver hadnt been on a tractor for 2 years. we ran this tractor last year and got a late start this year. i have ran this tractor almost all of its life. final ration is around 19.1. we run a girdle. no deck plate but we had 1/2 grade 8 tie bolts that went through girdle to top of block and it broke all of those also. and ed on the pump yes gov housing was broke but we think it bent shaft where weights are.

It's great that your using an AC tractor and engine and can afford this great sport. And know your not only one splitting Blocks. Have been a few lately. Hope you can make it stronger and don't have a 3rd one explode! |
