Im looking to add some gearing to my 180 I can't hardly handle 8th 22.5:1 and am blowing the wheels off in 7th 28.25:1. I have a 23-22 tooth gear set in the second gear transmission slot. What I am wondering is if with having those two gears that are close together if I can overdrive the low side of the power director to give me two gears just under 8th.

I wish I had a photo with the over / under gears and their tooth counts in the torque housing. There should be a way to change the gear pair (not the hollow shaft pair - the other pair) to get a ratio so low side is 10% or so faster. You should be able to have custom gears made as they are a simple, helical cut gear with a splined I.D. You could have that pair made close to whatever ratio suits you. High side would remain the same. Low side would be faster. The 20% gap in speed between the two would be less.

What about a gear box mounted in front of tranny that way you cam change gearing to
Go Faster Easier and cheaper if you want to build more power down the road ? |

That is true. Mack on this forum has them for sale and maybe even on the shelf at any ratio you want. Keep in mind that speeds EVERYTHING up or slows everything down depending on what you chose to do.
In my mind, for your class the 180 - 185 driveline with 18 X 38 rubber is perfect. If the low side of the PD could be sped up 10% you would have two useable gears and that's all you would ever need. If you needed to go faster, then make the low side gears faster than the high side gears if that is possible. I wouldn't know without disassembling a torque housing and doing some measuring. The problem that will arise will be if you have enough poop under the hood to run faster than road gear (and spin it out with authority) you will most likely break the over / under gear system. |

I have talked a little to eugene McNealy about a gearbox. Is that the same guy? Im pretty sure the dominant tractor in the class is running right at 23.5:1 gear and spinning it out pretty easily. I'll admit he has me out horsed by a good amount. But I think with some time and work I'll be able to get it up there and run that 8th gear a little better. I really think the way it sits im leaving quite a bit on the table as far as having the motor really running right. I feel like a 25.5:1 gear is a little on the slow side. Im thinking 24:1 would work better. I know im splitting hairs but really feel like that is the magic number for me right now.

Ok thanks. Im going to try to get on a dyno at some point this winter im thinking ill probably wait until I have a better idea lf what kind of improvement I can make on getting it to lug properly before I do anything with the trans. It just seems to always fall on its face right now and cant seem to get any consistency on pressures and temps. Its good to have the people on this site

There are alot of cummins forums. But they are all full of kids wanting to know how to make their trucks smoke and what kind of chrome stacks make the most horsepower. Most of those guys dont have a clue how to make power at 3000 rpm. The only answer you would get is put a bigger turbo on and add an intercooler

Not sure how built that 5.9 is of yours but if go with a bigger gear set is won't be hard to make up the power and cheap to make it spin out even at 3000rpm

Yep got the same prob. I talked to atlas tractor and emailed cross sections of pd and trans to get a set of gears to speed me up. I'm at 27.8 to 1 and high 4th is 22.3 to 1.
