what is the differance in the 616 620 720 appears all be the same bore and stroke are there differances in the rest of the tractor

620 and 720 are the same machine.  Only the decals are different.  616 is less hp (16 rather that 19.5) - uses the Onan CCKA engine rather than the CCKB.  Aside from that, all 3 are mechanically the same.

I sort of remember reading there was a front spindle change at some point.
Maybe 5/8" diameter on the 616 and 3/4" diameter on the 620/720?

Brian is correct on there being different spindles. Have seen a couple of 620's with the "lighter" front axles.

The axle in the picture is the heavy duty, easy to identify by the heavy arms on top the spindles.

I've always liked the looks of those rectangle lights but can never find a set that will mount right.   What make light are those and any recollection on where you purchased them?

Nate, I believe the square lights were some universal style from Tractor Supply. Will see if there is some info on the lights today. One of the originals was missing and the mount for the other was messed up.

In comparing the front axles here is a pic from my 620 with the lighter axle.

Honda repower, the crank on the Onan sheared at the flywheel mounting area. Happened in the middle of winter while snow blowing.

we have been repowering with 23hp briggs vangaurd we are dealers for both honda and briggs but the briggs has all of the stub shafts and muffler options that bolt up better for most repowers      what did you do for a stubb shaft for the honda flywheel  the 616 that i just bought i have a used opposed twin  kolher magnam 18 do you guys think it will have enough power

The stub shaft was part of the kit I ordered from SEPW. The Briggs options might be why SEPW doesn't have the Honda kit currently available.

I guess my 620 has the standard front axle. Hope it handles the loader okay..

Great picture. I was wondering how the clutch works on the 620.
Looks to me, when you push in on the clutch, that pulley we see goes up and takes
the grip out of the belt. There is no idler type pulley. The big spring supplies the
down force when you let clutch pedal out.

What kind of u-joins in the drive shaft?

There's no U joints in the drive shaft...just those fiberglass (not sure what they are made of) discs.  Those are tough little discs.  Den

Own 4 wheel 20, 2-5015, 5020 and associated equipment and 2 electric forklifts.

I think those things are "bionic discs"! I don't know what they're made of. Looks like fiberglass, but not sure...

I dont know much about any of them except the 616. There were 3 different 616s made. There was the regular style 616 which was the cheapest and the ruff-up tractor, the 616 hydro which was more of a ruff-up tractor but with the luxury of a hydrostatic-drive transmission, and then there was the 616 special which is what i own it was the most luxurious of the bunch and there was around only 1500 made. They had 5 gears and they were all in a straight line it had a 16 horse 2 cylinder briggs and stratton engine and a 42 inch deck. They had parking brake built in with the clutch and an easy locking hood. They were very good tractors and very luxurious.

616 has a down draft carb 620 & 720 have a larger side draft carb

You are referring to the 600 series lawn tractors.  The topic of this post refers to the differences of the bigger compact garden tractors.  The 616, 620 and 720 are the ones with 60" mower decks, 3 point hitch, front and optional rear ptos.  All of them were hydrostatic, and all of them were equipped with Onan 2 cylinder engines.

Yes, it can be confusing when they made 2 different tractors with the same model number!

The spindle size is basically the same. The heavy front end in reality is the spindle cap wit the keyed/tapered top that won't wear and slip like the early only keyed crank arms. I also have several parts tractors, some with the square headlights and some with the round. Since there were 2 styles of fenders and lights that bounced between production years I can only deduce that during production different vendors were used. Hope this info helps.

Mine has the none-tapered arrangement.
Speaking of steering, my 620 turns tighter to the right than to the
left. Is that a feature or a setup error on my particular machine?
Is it OK to used the split brakes to assist turning?
