 Topic: An early plow day

Well I got the 3-14 plow on the D17D a couple of days ago and shined it up in my fields. Today I trailered it to our new school farm field and we had a plow day. The soil was perfect....I also hauled in my D14 w/ 2-14 plow.....I did most of my plowing with that as I let a couple of JD guys run the 17....I may have converted them! 3 of us plowed 3.5 acres in about 2 hours....would have been faster, but the 3-14 JD plow had some lift issues...

Eldon: Does your 17 have fluid in the tires? I was wondering how well your tractor pulled those three bottoms without any rear weights in your type of soil. Here in Mo. without some weight it would be difficult. Here with fluid, you might get by without weights. Dave.

David the 14.9's are loaded and pull a 3-14 very easily. I bought this tractor will new Firestone Field and Road 16.9's, but put them on my D17 SIV diesel....these ugly buggers came off of a D17 hi clearance SF gasser. I bought the plow from Andrew in Nebraska and it really sucks....in a good way LOL!

It does look like a good set up. Do you think it could pull 4 bottoms with some more weight, or would you be about powered out? I realize soil differences make a big difference, just curious. Dave.

Dave - I pull a model 74 4-14's fully mounted SC plow with my D17 Series IV gas in central MO soils without problems except for a few spots of clay in my south bottom. I plan to have another plow this spring...you need to come!
Eldon - you are really making me wish for spring! Is this the earliest you've been able to get out and do tillage out there in WA? I did see some guys in north Central IL along I-39 with big 4WD JD's and anydrous applicators out. I also saw some guys still shelling corn too! I was headed up to West Bend, WI for my annual ballooning safety seminar today.
But it's one more day of winter fun for me as I'll get my one day of skiing in tomorrow at Rib Mtn in Wausau, WI. Mike

Dave I have pulled 4-16's in my soil without a problem with my D17SIV diesel....and it is a pull type IH plow. I'd like to find a SC 4-16 but they are rare out here. Milke this is about right for us out here, even tho we had a mild winter, we did get a lot of rain. The valley soil is gravelly so it drains faster, up on the benches it is way too wet yet. I have onions sets I need to get in the ground this week....will try to do half tomorrow.

Skyhighballoon, too bad I didn't know you were up here. Would have been nice to visit. I live in Jackson which is 15 minutes south of West Bend. Eldon, that's no fair. We have been in the low 40's for highs all week and we still have 6" of crusty white snow on top. Maybe by the end of this week, we will see the mud underneath.

That is no fair. It seems like nearly every snow storm that passed through the middle of the country dumped on us in central Iowa. Yesterday I drove over to the Quad Cities area and they have less than half the snow we have.

Pic of the 52 behind the D14. I have coulters on this plow....usually can't use them in our rocky soil, but this field wasn't too bad

That old Oliver and an old JD plow did a good job. The plow hadn't been used in years and shined up on the first round.

Before we could have a Plow Day, would have to get through the snow, then the mud/frost. lol Just came in from trying to get the snow melt away from my garage doors, and moving some muddy gravel in it's place with the CA/blade.
