By lightening the weights, in a sense you would make them stronger.

The solution has always been to put in a spring with more tension, the weights have to spin faster in order to overcome the spring tension.  If the weights are lighter (material removed from the right areas) they also have to spin faster, only now the spring doesn;t have to have as much tension.

I just lightened mine by milling off material and weighed them to make sure I machined the same off each one.

Where would one remove the unwanted material from to lighting the weights up. And roughly would sould they weigh.

This is a good topic in my mind. I have been wanting to do this to. Just never had the time but think this summer I will try it on my last build.
I would like to run around 2500 or so but that's probably getting pretty technical on amount of weight to shave off to get to that RPM. haha... either way I am interested to what you have to say Marty.

I drilled hoes in mine I think 2 5/16 holes in each one brought it up to 2200 with gleaner e spring just don't drill holes too close to the edge

The normal thickness (front to back) of the governor weight is approx. 11/16" for WC-WD-WD45-D17's.   The model 170-175 weights are thinner, and are only 7/16" thick front to back. The removal of material off of the front face of the governor weight to get the 11/16" dimension down to 7/16" will gain approximately 200 RPM with the same governor spring and no other adjustment changes.
