WD 45 PLOWING ?

   Just put my 2 bottom 3 point plow on my WD45.  The ground I'm plowing in is heavy topsoil and clay.  When it starts to pull hard, my hand clutch kicks out.  Anyone know why this would happen?  Any help is greatly appreciated as I am new to the AC line of tractors....     gd

	Does your WD45 have a "rock clutch", that's what my dad called it anyway? It's a short lever with a U-shaped piece of steel at the top that hits the hand clutch and pushes it forward when the plow hits a rock and pulls hard on the snap or pin coupler under the tractor.

	There are two ways to adjust the "kick-out". One is to turn the fork back as far as possible, the other is to adjust the hand clutch lever forward.
	Most problems can be solved with the proper application of high explosives.

	Or third, simply take it off. Only one WD carcus around here has that throwout on it yet. All the rest came on this place without one. If you got ROCKs, might be handy to just adjust it untill it holds for average plowing till you hit that big un you didn't see.

	They're a good idea if you have stumps, rocks, potential old foundations, etc., but they ought to come with an airbag. If you hit something hard at full tilt you're apt to end up hitting the steering wheel pretty hard. Adjusted properly they work real well.

	Guys I thought those were triggered by the snap coupler somehow. I just noticed he said 3pt plow. Mine doesn't have this lever so I'm not sure.

	They are right Thad. My 3 point arms are hooked to the snap coupler, and I have the "rock" clutch still on my tractor. Makes sense to me now. Guess I'll be taking that lever off. Thanks guys for all the info!! much appreciated.... gd

	The easy way to disable this is to pull the cotter pin on the pin the snap coupler is mounted on and slide the pin so it does not actuate the throwout lever tab. Keep in mind this is here to protect the tractor's drive line, and make sure you have the proper shear bolts in your plow arms...or you will be replacing ring and pinion gears in your tractors. I can remember this job as a teenager after hitting a fairly good sized rock in red clay in NW ohio. The plow point bent down, the tractor stopped, and three teeth on the ring gear snapped off. We towed the tractor (WD-45) back to the barn and spring plowing came to an abrupt halt for the next five days. I had sheared the plow arm bolt the day before and replaced it with what was available...big mistake. Before the tractor went back to the field, the clutch throwout assy came off the WD and went on the WD-45, where it remains today, fifty years later. I also got a supply of soft bolts for the plow arms to shear.

	Yep, it's not very fun when you find a big rock. I was at a plow day in NE Ia once and found a rock with my CA that was a big enough jolt that it jerked the front wheel out of the furrow and embedded the steering wheel acorn nut in my chest.
