My friend Al and his daughter need a little help getting just a little more power from their WC. Can anyone tell us exactly what carburetor venturi we could install and where to get it? Also, what is the part number of the governor spring that will give them the most RPM? This WC has a WD-45 crankshaft, manifold and the Marvel TSX carburetor. It has 4 1/8” Power Crater pistons. Can anyone tell us what we need and where to get it? This tractor is pulled at stock RPM, and some places with no RPM limits. Thanks |

Watch swappin' venturi's in some TSX series carbs. Stick with the same family of carbs. You don't want to disrupt the correct stochiometric air/fuel ratio that the carb was designed to provide. Smoothing the inside of the carb intake bore, and contouring the plenum bowl can provide faster air speed which equates to torque. You can then experiment with fuel consuption, and possibly increase one jet size depending on how much air/fuel the engine can ingest and where it likes to run. Like anything else, its all in the combination. It takes some experiementation at times to get the right combination. Spark plugs will tell you a lot. I do a lot of carb rebuilding, be happy to help out with any info if I can....

If the engine has very many hours on it, a problem could arise with a higher governed RPM. I have heard of broken rings from being jammed into a ridge that has already developed on the cylinder.

The venturi from a tsx 977 carb you can purchase it from new holland it will fit right in the tsx 464 from the best i can tell its the same venturi as a 175 but about 50 bucks cheaper. you will need that savings to purchase this gov. spring part no.70226785. if you can find the tsx 977 carb its worth changing the air inlet is quiet a bit larger than the inlet on the tsx 464. tighten the valve lash up on the intake to get some more valve lift dont worry about the factory lash setting youre looking for free horsepower you just need some lash 5 to 6 thousandths will be fine .It may not help but its worth a try some it helps some it dont . if it needs more cam it helps when you tighten the lash up. |

We do have the TSX977 carburetor. Is there a larger venturi? Is the 175 venturi bigger than what we already have? We are looking for more upper RPM torque and will be testing on the dyno soon. We were hoping to have a few extra parts to test with. We have the adjustable main jet set up with a larger fixed jet in the bottom of the carburetor. We expect we can keep the mixture correct with that. Thanks, Bruce

if you have the tsx 977 then you have the right venturi . are you running thegov. spring with the part number listed above? Also I hope theys a smaller pipe in under the chrome one. You should try maybe a usx 21 carb if looking for power up stairs. I think you will see a improvement on the dyno to by tightening the valve lash up on the intake valves but i do not know what cam shaft youre running . I havent run the tsx 977 in a while but i was thinking the fixed jet had to be removed for the adjustable jet to work properly. We always ran better with a bigger carb and they never hurt us on lugging power but we always had extra stroke too. you will need to be careful how high twist the thing if you have stock valve springs . Its easy to float the valves with the punny springs and they dont last long if new with alot of rpms. If youre gonna attempt running rpms with stock springs remove the oil splash guard . so that the warm oil gets to the springs and dont twist its ear untill the oils at temp. they might last a season then you can upgrade to stiffer springs. i have never seen a valve spring yet that dont loose 10lbs of rate its first dyno run. also play with advancing the timing sometimes they are a bear to start when you find the timming that makes the ponies. theys ways around that two . jmho

some of the 901 had them and all the power units or at least they are more prevalent on the power units.
