I've got a wd45 I plan on pulling with this weekend and I'm wondering which is better to pull in, 1st or 2nd gear. 2nd is bad so I plan on pulling in1st. Do y'all think it could handle it in second? It only pops out under load so I'm doubting it. Is 1st even worth pulling in or should I just skip straight to third? I don't know if first is gonna spin the tires fast enough in first because I don't have much weight on it. It is bone stock and runs good. Thanks ahead for advice!

I am guessing 4500# class? Better stick with first, unless you pulling on the beach in loose sand!

I use 2nd with a bone stock WD45 in the 3500 lb. class with 13.6 x 28 tires. I could never go to 3rd, even on a soft track.
I plan to try to find a pair of 16.9 x 28 tires. I hope I have enough power in 1st...

Go for 1st.  You want to run out of traction, not power.

If you are running against other pure stock tractors (which I doubt happens anywhere...), drawbar, balance, tires, and other variables can make a lot of difference. Paying close attention to these things can pay huge dividends.

Of course, if someone has twice the power you do, you are already at a disadvantage.

This was a 3.5 mph pull , 4500#, 2nd gear, took 1st out of 32 hooks in that class. Pulled in Canada without a speed limit , pulled there in 3rd. Never used first until I got to the 5500lb and up.....

Pulling isn't all about power, it's a matter of learning how to go the farthest......
