Alfalfa has some aleliopathic (sp?) effects - for instance, alfalfa seed will not germinate in fields where alfalfa is currently growing. You usually have to wait 2 years or so to re-plant an alfalfa field with alfalfa. No idea how much this spills over into other crop germinations, but I'd bet some. And I'd hesitate in overseeding something as expensive as alfalfa.

Bryan is right, overseeding into a good alfalfa stand won't result in much usable forage and may do more damage to the alfalfa than you would gain in forage.
If you have a bean field or corn field where you can put some winter rye would be best. The next alternative is to use winter wheat.
