The HD4 we have is having steering trouble. When you start really pushing with it, one side slips to the point now where you cant really do anything with it. Tried adjusting the lever, helped a tiny amount but not enough. So I'm guessing the clutch needs replaced on that side. Has anybody had one apart to tell me what I'm getting in to? Parts available?

They are fun to work on! Worst parts is getting all stuff above the final drive off! If you don't have a service manual, get one and it will help you out! You'll need to remove all rear sheet metal above the final drive so you can remove top cover and be able to work on it. Then loosen and undo brake band linkage inside and remove the pivot pin. Then undo the band-clip holding the drive shaft in place. You have to push the shaft towards the ring and pinion. And don't push it to far! Then remove 6 bolts holding the pressure plate assembly to the final drive hub and lift the clutch assembly and brake band out. Lay unit on bench and remove 6 bolts holding it together. Make sure it has grade 8 bolts in it also! Linings are available from various vendors. And if brake bands need relined you can normally get them done locally for less dollars!

That spring clip on axle is the part where you scratch your head , put a wire tied to the shaft so when you push it back in hollow drive axle you can retrieve it easily .
You clutch pack or plate might be oil soaked or ? there are drain plugs on bottom of case 2" pipe thread, these need to have drain holes in them to let any leakage or water out of the case. Mine had what looked like barrel bung plug in them with a 3/8 hole drilled through to allow drainage .
