    Posted: 11 Feb 2010 at 9:37pm
I have an Allis Chalmers "C" that has water leaking out of the exhaust manifold when running.  I fill the radiator with water and it is gone within a half an hour of use?  Is this likely a cracked head, block, or worse?  There is no water in the oil, however the previous owner claims that he put a new head gasket in it, and it still leaked?  Any help would be appreciated.

Could be a cracked head, sleeve or just a blown head gasket, some body else might know more for sure, I am just saying things that would make sense to me.

Some bolt mounting holes in the W series are drilled through into the water jacket. It could be the case in your situation that the water is getting past a stud and running out of the manifold. ?????

open the radiator while running before it gets hot and see if you got compression getting in to the cooling system...  If you want to try to cheat it out you can put in some alumniseal will seal a small leak around a stud but you know a c is pretty easy to pull the head and Im bout willing to bet its a head gasket....  If you were making oil (water in oil system and oil level rising) Id worry bout crack  A head gasket will reveal itself....  If it was me Id try the alumniseal you have no heater core to plug up so you will be fine if it works your out 3 bucks...

read the post again I would think a cracked block would be obvious unless its internal????  still try the alumniseal or simply replace the suspected bolt......

Thanks for the input!  I suspect that if a new head gasket has already been installed it must be something else.  I think I will try take the head bolts out one at a time and put thread sealer around them.  That won't cost me anything but time.    If that don't work then maybe I will take the head off and and see if it is cracked.

Try sealing the manifold bolts first. Some of the tapped stud holes may break into the water jacket.
