Am trying to clean 50 years of crud from the air cleaner. The center passage (where the air comes in) I can get to but the passage between the walls (where the filtered air goes back up is plugged solid. I tryed digging it out but can not get all the of it. Does the top (not the cap) come off the whole canister? I can't get it apart. Is there a good way to get too it?

I don't think it comes apart. Best thing to do is flush it out with diesel, gas or some sort of solvent, then flush some more. Then flush again. If the oil bath breather is kept clean and serviced it works fine on these old tractors. The cleaner you get it the more air you will get through it.

I've soaked mine in the parts cleaner for a couple of days with good success.

That innner liner has 3 clips on it. Don't know what they are for unles it is to hold the liner in--if so I wonder if that liner can come out. I tried but it would not budge.

Somebody on the forum once talked about breaking the welds to remove the retainer of the steel wool. I believe there are spot welds holding it. If you could agitate it in diesel or use electrolysis on it it should come clean without breaking the welds. Hmm maybe they were talking about the cap.

I dont remember exactly how I did it but I remember pulling out a roll of steel mesh material on my wd that was just full of crud. I unrolled it cleaned it and rolled it back up .I thought there were tabs that I bent to get the canister out, but it also may have been welds. I did get it out though

The inner space is only 3/8 inch wide. I've been soaking then putting a long hook in to try to dig it out but it is set like concerte. The poor thing probably has not had a goood breath of air for 30 years.

Charlie, you are right, someone did describe how they took one apart, and it DID (as I remember) require undoing some welds. Sure would be nice if some manufacture would make a "throwaway" for the shell of the aircleaner.

Soak it, attack with a sharp pointy object, hit it with compressed air.....just takes time. I did the same rehab on my WC and spent a day or so getting it clean.

does your aircleaner have a screen on the bottom or does it have something that looks more like the facemask on a football helmet? The screen has clips holding the mesh in and the other has spot welds or dimples holding it together. Mine had the dimples which I used a drill and drilled them out, the hard part was triing to get the ring in the middle off the intake pipe, think it was pressed on but I did get it done. John

Mine has the screen with clips holding the mess in.
One other question? What is the purpose of the clip ring in the oil cup? I have the ring but it holds nothing. What is missing?

The wire mesh should pull out. I don't remember what held it in but I know I didn't break any welds. The next thing I did was take the housing to the local Napa shop and had them run it through their jet wash that they use on carbs. That really did the job and it didn't cost maybe a few bucks. Clean as a whistle. About two years later I found this round expanded metal screen that I had forgot to put in. That's been almost tens years ago and the screen still sits in my tool box. I'll get there one of these days. Not sure what it's for anyhow.
