Does the cover on your govenor have a allen style srew through the top with a jam nut on it? If so that limits how far the spring can be streched witch limits the govenor.you can also bend thevertical rod on the carb side but only bend it a little that is what I did with my wd45

I assume we are talking about a 201 or 226 in a WC, WD, or WD45. If so a D17 spring will get you somewhere around 2100 RPM. A 175 spring is going to be 200-250 RPM less.

DrAllis has covered it 1000 times...D17 spring is 2050 rpm roughly. Bending the gov rod out of spec just makes your governor not work right. Adjust it properly for maximum rpm and governor response.

Well thanks to all. I won't bend the rod. That's not how it was factory. It's a 17 motor in a 17. Last night the most I got was 1800 that's it. Allen screw is up all the way. I didn't kno if there was any other springs that people have used and worked.

With the engine off, pull the hand throttle wide open. The rod to the carb from the governor should have the carb wide open. Pull the cotter key from the governor end...it should slide in and out or even be an 1/8" long to ensure it opens the carb the whole way...if its too far out then bend the rod (carb to governor not the governor arm) until desired length is achieved. 2050 rpm is with a D17 spring and WC or WD gov weights....I think for more rpm in a D17 you need different weights but I could be wrong.....would the good Doctor care to chime in? lol

I prefer the carb link rod to be 1/16" to 1/8" too SHORT. The last few of degrees of throttle shaft rotation yields zero HP, and makes the governor snappier.

I never really thought of makeing it to short, but it makes perfect sense. When I flow test these single barrel updraft carbuerators on my Superflow, they are done gaining any flow when the throttle blade is about 90% open, that's just a guess and it varys some carb to carb.
What helps is to bend the choke stop just a little so the choke blade is tipped just a few, 3 to 4 degrees up. It offers a little lift to the incomeing air charge and helps direct it up at the venturi. The carbs alwayse gain a few CFM of airflow when I do this. Removeing the choke plate and shaft seldom if never help.
I won't and don't need to get into what's happening in the cylinder, vs what's going on in the manifold and carbuerator here, or all the other carbuerator modifications with custom parts, machining and epoxy work that really make them move some air but take Docs advice, it makes perfect sense and I've done and seen the "science" to back it up. Use safety wire to wire a turn or two together on the spring, that way the spring can't stretch as far.....or so I have been told. Haven't tried it, I'm skeert!
