Have any of you had any experience with the new water "softeners" that use a magnetic field to eliminate hard water problems? I have seen them advertised but wanted to know if they really work or not. Seems almost too good to be true and we all know what that usually means. Thanks for any input.

Old addage of a sucker born every minute.
Friend tried one and said how great it was, then his wife mentioned her hair never seemed to come clean and felt like there was soap left in it ..Closthes were getting dingy after washing ... Well I installed a regular softner a year later for them , think you could by their magnetic , merical unit real cheap .
Hard water is disolved minerals in water, the salt type replace one ion of disolved mineral with 2 ions of sodium. The disolved minerals are held in the resins until backwashing removes them by replacing them with sodium ions wnich are exchanged later again.
Someone has to explain where the hardness goes in these new units, as it is still in the water ?
Years back they sold magnets to place on line to carb on engines , said to give more power and better milage as it alligned the molicues in gas for complete burning. Lot of people made JC Whitney happy by sending them money.
Get couple of cow magnets and place them on your water pipes with duct tape and see if it makes a difference!

radio guys in Indy claim they don't change softness but do prevent some damage due to corrosion of pipes and heating elements. They recommend em with tankless water heaters.

Coke's got it right...buy a real water softener! In 'therory', and it's a long strech, as long as the water is in motion it'll be 'soft', as soon as the water stops it quickly 'recombines' into hard water.I can make the 'magic black box' for about $10(simple microcomputer and a few parts)to give you an idea of the profit these guys get.
Remember if it sounds too good to be true...it usually is !

I'm in the water business, and I would say they are definetly NOT worth the money. The best way to soften water is with a regular old water softener....... gd
