Hello everyone. New to the board and just picked up a late 60's hd4 with a 6-way and ripper. Over all its in good shape but reverse went out semi suddenly. Forward works fine but not reverse. It started out that reverse was working, then it started to not engage on steep inclines so i thought ut-oh the clutches. But i did a little research and tore into the shuttle shift valve body and found a glob of silicone in the bottom of the assembly and a busted retaining washer on the rod that goes into the spool assembly. I replaced the retaining washer with a c-clip and cleaned oit the silicone and reverse worked like brand new! Well that lasted for the day and then all of the sudden no reverse. Does anyone have any idea what dirrection i should be looking now? I am thinking of trying to drain and flush the system to see if there is more of the mystery silicome plugging a line. Not sure if anyone else has run into a similar situation. Thanks for any help or ideas. I am really hoping i am not looking at splitting this sucker.

I would guess the shuttle pack on reverse gear is not holding. The shuttle changes the direction of driven gears in torque tube housing. I would first start there. Probably the cylinder that activates is is losing pressure on reverse side. I don't have my manual here at home. I would like pics of your ripper and the cylinders.I wonder which variation you have. Thanks Tracy Martin

![]() Tracy here is the ripper set up. Tore the side cover off the converter resevior and only had 1 out of 3 o-rings on the lines there and a glob of blue silicone. Thought i might have found my problem. Put it back together and it worked for a second the no more reverse again. guess i will be back at it when it stops snowing. |

On mine I had a broken spring on the reverse side in the valve body - the plunger would not line up right with holes in valve body to allow flow to reverse side. Fwd was strong and Rev would not engage but if lever was played with and held back it would allow machine to move some.

After thinking about it, your shuttle pack might be slipping on one side. That is what changes the direction of reverser gears. HTH Tracy Martin

Fluids are all full. reverse worked enough to power through holding both brakes. It feels like its not fully engaging in reverse though. When i put it in fwd it slams in. not a painful slam but you can feel it connect. in rev it doesnt do that. the fluid also isnt burnt smelling and is red not fouled like i would expect with say a burnt plate. but i am only saying what i would expect to see with an auto from a truck or car not a piece of heavy equip. i am open to all ideas at this point. i am 10mi up in the mountains and have very limited internet for research so any ideas a very much appriciated.

Tracy, i also didnt hear any grinding. it feels like its either not getting enough pressure on the rev side to hold or like you said possibly slipping. but before rev stopped it was working great the i had nothing all of the sudden. i am just crossing my fingers hoping its not a split the case type of fix.

Could be a leak internally. I would check the HYD pressure. Does your dozer have a decellarator pedal? A previous owner could have changed directions without lowering engine RPM. If it is strong in reverse, when it does reverse.I suspect your clutch pack is loosing pressure. Due to the actuator not holding it over center. HTH Tracy Martin

Coke, a previous post of yours about the broken spring led me to finding the busted washer and the initial traces of the blue silicone. i fixed the broken washer with a c-clip and then everyting worked for the day. i reversed the fwd and rev lines at the shuttle valve and still have the issue with reversed controls so i dont think the shuttle control body is an issue anymore. is it possible there is a cracked line internally on the rev side?

Well i took the converter resivior off and had a looksee at the shuttle. Found a busted ring in the bottom of the case. So here goes the fun of splitting this sucker in half. Found the master pins welded so this is already starting out fun. Thanks for the help guys. I will post what else i find once i get it apart.
