From what I hear pretty expensive, but most of it is labor tearing everything apart to get to it.  Somebody that knows a lot more than I should be along soon to tell you how to check the shift fork and modify the detent to make it engage deeper into the gear, I learn more from this forum than any I and T manual.

I did my D12 which uses the same parts for around $800. I had to replace a bearing also.
It really depends on what you need when you pull it apart. Shift forks wore out? Might as well do Reverse while you are in there. Figure $150 or so per gear and then if the main shaft or pinion or both sets you need to replace....

Last average price on parts I had was around $1000.  You won't know for sure until you get in there.  The input shaft also needed replacing on my 190XT.  That was extra.  Gears, collars, and bearings at minimum.

I rebuilt one. Had to replace the casting and the pinion shaft had parts of the teeth missing. I can't wait to rebuild another. (not) After I got it done the reverse gear sounded like the trans was full of a box of rocks.

Doing a 14 now 2nd 3rd and 4th with collars and three bearings gaskets seals and a few parts for  power director and have $1500

I kinda have the same issue with my D15 series II. Shifts into third fine and will hold the gear, but sounds like a can of rocks rolling around when your driving in third.

That's the reverse idler gear interacting with 3rd gear

I have the same issue on my D10 Series 3. Mine is a early serial and AC decided to revise the idler is that series. Well it was known to make noises and AC put out a service bulletin to correct it (If the customer complained). Later serials had it fixed from the factory.

I decided to fix this when I was redoing my brakes. I figured the gear alignment was off so I added a bit of medal to the shift collar. Now it pops out of 3rd, so my assumption was not right! Got to take it apart again and undo what I did.

I think your gear "rack" Lash or what ever its called, affects this also.

The doctor reworked my shifter to improve engagement, doesn't pop out of gear anymore.

Well that sounds like good news. Maybe a cheaper fix than I original thought. So I'm assuming they have a different style idler? Or is it like a shim or different shift fork? The story goes dad was trying to pull something out of the ground that was buried. Took a little run at it and heard a noise in the tranny. Now third has always been noisey. The tractor is an early 1965. Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread. Just got me curious.

There are shims of various thickness to use as needed. But You have to tear it all apart to do that and then figure out which ones to use for the correct amount of slack.
