I was replying in another thread and realised there was something I have been going to ask the board... Is there any way to make the starter stronger? I have a new 12 volt 660cca battery, new cables, starter just "rebuilt". A couple of cranks without charging and you are done.. It did fine before engine mods. I have got to go back in the starter, keep burning the contact terminal under the starter button off. I plan on going to key switch starting...

Use bigger cables (or welding cables).....run the ground directly to the starter set-bolt.....make sure the starter has a center bearing plate inside it.....660 CCA should be enough for what you have, but 900 or 1000 CCA's is better.

Also, you need to have your act together.....set the throttle at the same place each time for quick starting....don't step on the clutch pedal......choke if needed, etc......I have one of mine with 390 cubes that when I shut it off and it's going to sit and go cold, I choke it as I shut off the key, so I don't have to crank it so long to get it to fire when cold. It also starts better at an idle when hot versus open the throttle a tad when cold. You can't crank for 20 seconds and figure the battery is going to hang in there forever.

I converted all that stuff off the starter housing . Welded new stud on fielding . Use insulators of course . Hooked up solinoid and simple push button. Never had issue since. I think the newer brass isn't like the old days.
