So I bought a quart of Persian at Agco today, as well as a rattle can, to use on my WD. I have to say the paint is absolutely excellent. It was not cheap, but I think the color is dead on and the quality is as good or better than any paint Ive used.I don't think it will take two quarts to do the whole tractor, I'm really pleased so far, just for info., Trev.

Does this paint come with hardner? What would the price be per quart in US dollars?

Trev is right, I use it all the time and it is good paint....not cheap but does a good job. I use the rattle cans with persian 2 for my 720's and have been well pleased with the results and most do not believe it was painted with a spray can. But a lot of that is because the paint is good. And I like the color match. Don't know the price on the quarts, etc. Den

No hardener, don't think it needs it, there is thinner, but I'm not gonna use any. I paid $60 CAD for what we call a quart/946ml, I expect U.S. price would be about the same. I think you could get a gallon of lousy paint for $60, but after trying this stuff, I'll pay the $60/quart and do it once, Trev.

Good paint is worth a lot and is cheaper in the long run. I like hardener in paint even if it is just a little. That way if you need to repaint a spot sometime it won't blister and raise up when you paint over it. It also speeds up the cure time and it doesn't have that soft feel to it for so long. It also helps give a little more shine in most cases.JP |

Can one use AGCO PO1 in a rattle can and spray a hardener over it, IF, one can buy hardener in a rattle can as well? I don't have all of the fancy spray guns.

I agree that the Agco paint seems to be very good. I have painted a few things with a Agco rattle can and the gloss and finish are pretty nice. Ryan

I use Omni on all my car/truck jobs. I'd say this paint is every bit as good as Omni. Hardener gets used when things need to be put back into service fast. This thing will sit in a heated shop til next spring so no hurry. And, what I painted this afternoon is already dry to the touch. Just saying, this stuff seems alright, and I have no intentions of doing it again. Ive used cheap paint, and in a few years got to do it all over again, getting too old to do stuff twice...I don't know if you could spray clear coat over it, I'm not gonna try, seems glossy enough, and I think it'll be tough enough, Trev.

Trevman, Thank you for posting your thoughts on the AGCO paint. I was at the local AGCO dealer to pick up some parts for the D17 last week and while they were fetching parts for me I was looking at that paint on the shelf. I was wondering if it was any good.
Valspar quit making their restoration series paint so I was curious about the AGCO paint. The paint I was looking at was persion #1......... I plan on starting my D17 III restoration next year finally! Does AGCO carry the correct color for the Series III does anybody know off hand? I guess that would be Persian #2

I painted Dad's WD45 with AGCO (AC back then) PO2 in 1980 and you can touch it up with an AGCO spray can of PO2 and it's still a perfect match. This has been a working tractor and it still cleans up nice. It's the only paint I use on my ACs. I've never used hardener in any paint.

Yes Dennis, I got a quart sitting right next to me. Part#79014785. I think I paid almost $90.00++ a month ago. Question, why is PO#1 so cheap compared to PO#2 when bought from Agco?? Ryan

What the heck? I'm gonna be back at the dealer on Wednesday to pick up a 1600rpm gov spring/plunger for my WD. I'm gonna price the Persian 2 in the quart to see what it is, I don't know why it would be a third more? ITS INVESTIGATION TIME! Trev.

There are 3 ways to do job GOOD, FAST, CHEAP. YOU MAY CHOOSE 2. If its FAST & CHEAP it won't be GOOD, if it's GOOD & CHEAP it won't be FAST, and if its GOOD & FAST it won't be CHEAP!!!!

PO #2 is close to twice the price of PO #1 at our Agco dealer.. Agco brand Corporate Orange is also much cheaper... Why the expensive price for PO #2?

I add hardener to the agco paint, the purpose is not only to make the paint look more shiny, it also makes the finish more durable. I have used it without in the past and you can really tell the difference in the end result.

I was always told that hardener makes the paint job stand up to scuffs better but will chip easier. I've also always heard that it's the hardener that is the most deadly ingredient, cancer wise, in paint as far as breathing it and is bad bad even if it finds the tiniest leak around your mask and I was told that most common canister masks won't filter it out properly. Just what I've been told in the past.
BTW can you ad linseed oil to get a good shine. Never tried it but heard you can. Is this true for modern paints today?

Trev, what is the AGCO # for Persian #1?
The price gouge? Because they can and I am guessing it is because more people are restoring D series tractors. Hence the 'supply and demand' price. Just my $0.02 |

Dont add anything that isnt recommended on the tech sheet from the manufacturer of the paint. Hardner will help with stone ships a bit and speed the dry time some. It will not affect the over all look or finish.

Also, spend the money on good paint. It really isnt worth it to me to do all the work and then cover it in sub par materials. If I paint something, I sure would like it to last.

Ted I'll look on my bill for the part number. They don't list a hardener, but they do have a thinner on the shelf. I'm not thinning, I use a graco 4500 hvlp machine to paint with, it"ll blow the paint on unthinned. Cuts down on the runs and also thinner in the air. Its the isocyinates that are especially dangerous, the root being cyanide. Don't want that stuff in your lungs! I don't imagine they used hardener in 1950 when this thing was painted I think it will last a while for me, and I agree, Ive "custom" mixed paint before and ended up with a disaster. I don't mix anything in paint that is not on a spec sheet, I don't know enough about paint formulas to play with that. Trev.

Bought a spray can of PO#1, at Agco, this last summer, for all most $25 a can, and a can of PO#2 for $12 a can. Partsman said quarts of PO#1 was $90, and #2 was $25.

Deere paint is also made by Valspar. Its excellent paint. Interstingly enough, our "classic green" is $11/spray can and regular green is $9.95. Yellow pigment shouldn't be too expensive, our yellow paint is around $20/quart. I realize that reds and oranges are more expensive to produce but they are making a literal killing on that paint. I bought several 1 quart cans of Agco corporate orange for $16 each at list price in 2005. Edited by ACmowerguy - 28 Nov 2012 at 7:10pm |
