 Topic: WD Snap-Coupler Questions

Have questions about the WD that my son and I rescued from a fence row out by his place in Iowa:
1) I'm assuming that a '51 WD with snap-coupler must have been retrofitted with one at some time. Is that right?
2) The release chain is missing. What type of chain should it be? What should the length of the chain be so that it will work properly?
3) Would someone be able to post some pictures that show the correct routing of the chain down to the snap-coupler?

My '50 has snap coupler, and I always assumed they all did. Many have been converted to 3 point over the years. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

WD's came with a hitch with a horizontal pin. Many were retro fitted with the snap coupler bell. I don't remember the exact routing of the chain but ti's nothing special. It just runs up the side of the transmission. Just make sure it's ran so the chain follows the smoothest bends and doesn't bind when you push on the lever.

The WD pin hitch did not use the snap latches early on. If the WD was converted to snap coupler, make sure you use the snap latches on the lift arms. They are designed to let go if the implement eye comes loose from the coupler bell and hits the ground. If the lift arms don't let go, you could have a plow or grader blade try to occupy the seat at the same time you do. Since this stuff is about 50 years old, I would recommend a safety chain on the tongue of the implement.

We will be using the lift latches on the rock shaft arms. I've seen the pictures posted of plows coming loose from the snap-coupler eye and coming back over into the seat. Thanks.

Still looking for more info on the chain itself. What type of chain and what length? Still looking for someone that could post some pictures of the chain on a WD tractor. Pictures are always a great way to see how something goes. Thanks. Jim

Found the same type chain at the hardware store.Don't know what it's called.Like alot of dog chain where they take a length of wire and bend the ends back to the center and curl them around center lenght of original wire.Any SMALL chain would work. These are small wire,about like baling wire.

Although you didn't ask, the aft face of the snap coupler bell should not rotate more than 10 degrees up or 10 degrees down from its vertical plain (check it with one of those swinging indicator roof pitch protractors; cheapy from the big box store). If it does it has wear marks into its top side surface and needs to be welded flush. The accidental release happens when the bell has worn and rotates up or down too much and that makes it difficult for the release to release using the release handle. Guys would shorten the chain to get the release to work like when things were new. A few more times of shortening the chain and when the aft face of the bell would rotate up it would cause the chain to be pulled and that would cause the hook to be pulled down and the next thing the plow would be on your back. Be careful when you install a new chain. The hook should not move towards release when the bell is rotated. If you are going to install a bell check for wear in the top surface and weld it smooth before you install it.

And after all is working you could still run a safety chain from side to side to keep the hitch under the tractor if it should come loose.
