D12 oil pressure?

I have been doing long overdue mechanical maintenance on my Aunts D12. I changed the oil and filter. I replaced the WIX filter with a NAPA Gold. I also changed the gauges that have not worked in the past 40+ years. I don't have any oil pressure. I have been told that there could be a problem with the oil filter type/brand.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a page that shows the differences and which one you need.


Also make sure that the tube was in place when you put the oil filter on. Sometimes they pull out with an old filter.

I'll take a closer look. The oil press gauge that I replaced the original gauge with, goes to 100 psi (5 psi first mark), but it should still come off the peg if it has 10 psi or more, I would think.

A 100 psi oil gauge is NO good on your tractor. You need a 30psi gauge for it to show up after warming the engine. If thee tractor has been sitting a while, it might need some oil dumped down the line to prime the pump.

I'll second the gauge vote.  A 100lb gauge is designed to operate in the 50 or so range, and is terribly callibrated for 15 that you will likely see.  Start with the right gauge. 25lbs is the tops for that tractor.  You should be able to find a 30 or we can sell a reproduction.
I would not expect a 100 gauge to read anything at all at 5, or even 10 for that matter.

All of the answers so far are correct. First is that AC tractors unlike cars use a bypass oil syatem. What that means is that the oil pump pulls oil from the pan and creates pressure. This oil flow that goes to the filter is oil that is basicaly excess oil that is not needed for lubrication. It flows through the filter and then returns to the crankcase. To trouble shoot the system you need a gauge that has a max reading of 30psi or less. Your tractor when hot will be hard pressed to provide 20 psi if everything else is perfect, actual pressure is usually closer to 15. On a 100 psi gauge it may not read at all.  At the same time as you replace the gauge check to see that the metal tube didn't pull off with the old filter. Without it ALL your oil will bypass into the crankcase. The hole size in the end of the tube is critical and almost as important as the proper filter. Both the filter and tube provide a restriction that creates the pressure for other parts of the system. Replacement tubes are available from others on this site. Making the hole in the end of the tube smaller will slightly increase your oil pressure but does so at the expense of proper filtering. Lastly while doing your maintenance your pump may have lost it's prime. Remove the fitting from the oil filter housing and pump fresh oil with an oilcan back towards the pump. That should prime the pump.

check the archives , lots of good info on oil pressure issues on d10 -ca etc with and w/o full flow filters.

 Put rings in my D/14 and a new filter,after a few hours i could hear a pecking  sound . Took filter offand put on a fram 159 and added some lucus to oil .Cranked it up and it quieting down in about 30 seconds.Some time back someone on post said you could overhaul  one and put a full flow filter on it and a 100 hrs it  would be ready for another overhaul.

There is nothing wrong with a Wix filter as long as you didn't get hold of one that was made for a short time a few years ago when they changed the design for a little while. The NAPA gold is just a Wix with napa wrote on it. It should be #7011. If it was a Wix brand it would be #57011. I don't know why they changed the design that time but sure did mess them up. We had a case of them at work and I bought one of them and found out they didn't work right so we sent them back and got the new 57011's and they are just like the old ones and work fine on the old AC's. I know about the 100 lb oil pressure gauge first hand and I agree that you just need the right gauge.JP
