Hey Guys. Well it has been a longtime, but I have my 1947 WC Back together that I worked on over the winter. New Radiator, new head gasket, new oil and belt. I got it all back together today and started it up today. It ran like a charm! Then after about 3 minutes at idle, it just started smoking. It was a blueish/white smoke, but when you give it some throttle, it goes away. and after running it at half throttle for a while, it doesnt smoke. It only smokes when at idle, after idling for a minute or two. It dose emit ome black smoke, but thats because it is running rich. but after sitting at idle for about two minutes, HOLY SMOKES!!! no pun intended. New head gasket. No visable cracks when I had the pan and head off... clean water, new oil.. this has me flusterd! Blue smoke I can understand a stuck or broken ring, but a blueish/whiteish smoke? Anyone have any ideas?

Coolant getting in the combustion chamber? Head gasket leak, cracked head or sleeve. Warms up, starts to leak at idle and when you rev it up compression keeps it from getting in. Only a guess.

Try retorqueing the head again. Sounds like the head gasket is leaking.

I'm wit' Matt. Retorque the head gasket and see if it stops. Hopefully, its an easy fix.

Are you certain that the white smoke is water? Under some conditions oil smoke appears white. Best test I know of is taste. Just above the muffler run you fingers through the smoke a few times while it is smoking and taste, antifreeze is sweet. Second best test is smell. Antifreeze in exhaust has a distinct smell very much unlike oil. Fill the radiator to the top and look for bubbles. If none it is very doubtful that water is coming from head gasket. Oil smoke at idle that pretty much disappears when opened up is usually valve guides. Remove the manifold and look at valve stems. Hard to describe the amount of oil that is OK or not. There will always be some oil straining on the intakes. Exhausts should be dry. Any amount that can be rubbed off is bad.

I'm Bob's dad. One thing I noticed is that around one of the headbolts (studs) there is some bubbling after the tractor is shut off. We were trying to get it warm enough to check the tappets hot. We had done the cold set. I think we need to retorque it as well. I was very leary of the headgasket when we got it. It just didn't look like the one that was in it. We only have water in it for now. Thanks guys I am sure he will get back to you. Roger
