D15 charging system?

 My D15 wouldn't start. Nothing at all, tried to jump thru solenoid, barely a buzz, battery flat. I charged the battery,started fine. When cranking it will show a discharge. When running will not show charging. Is it the generator or voltage regulator? How do I check it to find out? Thanks Tracy Martin

You can test the gen easily. Remove the belt, disconnect the wires, and run battery voltage to the A terminal. It should spin like a motor. While motoring, ground the F terminal to the case. It should slow down, but continue to motor. Load test all of your wires by using them in a circuit to power a headlight bulb. If the wires and gen pass, the regulator is all that's left.

Never done it like Brian described, I always run the engine at half or so throttle and ground the F or Field terminal. You should see the amp meter jump to full charge. This too shows the generator is good or not. 90% of the time I find either a stuck brush or corroded brush holder or a bad regulator. Most of the new regulators are china made and the metal rivets on the bottom rust soon after installing it and it fails. IF you determine a faulty regulator I'd pop the cover and buff the points and check them for sticking and so forth before replacing. You might get lucky and keep a better one than you can buy.
