Finished up the last brake job this morning with the D17 SIV diesel. It was the last of 4 brake jobs in the last 3 weeks...the others were all 175 diesels. I think I ran into about every problem that can occur on these tractors and feel pretty good that I conquered them all. I found out that a large area to work, a cherry picker, several parts tractors and an acetylene torch come in very handy. The D17 had a drum that was about 1/2" less in diameter on one side (turned or worn down over the years) and a D19 drum on the other (larger pad than all the others). So, after 4 tractors I used up all the good drums, but have a nice supply of linings for for future jobs as a lot of the problems were not lining related. Next year it will be the 190XT w/cab :-(

Sorry Pat...once I get going I "usually" don't take picture breaks. I can say that it isn't rocket science....the "critical" dimension you need to measure becomes clear when you take it apart....and things go a lot faster if you can get that front pin for the 3pt cylinder out right off the bat. I liked having the stack of shims from my parts tractor to use to adjust the "critical" dimension....something most people wouldn't have laying around. I also bought the little aircraft riveter that some on here were talking about a few months back...neat little tool if you want to save some $$$ and do your own re-lining. I had under $400 cost in 4 tractors!

It's a great feeling to have good brakes!! I did a brake job on a WD45 for a guy that hadn't had any brakes for several years and he made hay with this tractor. He later told me he wished he would have done it years before. Far as I'm concerned its the no. one safety issue.
