 Topic: WC brake pin/handle

Working on a 1939 WC. Trying to get the left side pin out that the handle is attached to. Got the cotter pin out on the outside of the wheel side of the housing. The pin does not want to budge. Is there anything else (besides rust) holding this pin from coming out ?

If we are talking about the left side hand brake handle? there is a half moon key on the bottom of the the handle where it attaches to the pin that makes the brakes tighten ( work ) i think it would be a lot easier to get to it if the bushing that the pin rotates on was out before you try to get to that key. It doesn't show very well in the drawings. You may have to take the fenders and the brake housing off to really see it. I could email my parts book diagram if it would help. Just hope i didn't confuse you. Tractorman

Take the cap off first so you can see what you are up against. Line up the key with the gap in the brake band so you won't hurt the band as the key goes through. Us a piece of wood or metal to take up the space between the band and housing so the band doesn't get hurt. Let the key knock out the bushing on the way, you can put it back or replace it later.It isn't special. If you're pulling the bands, be sure to tie something like heavy twine or flexible wire to it so you can use that to pull the new ones around the drum.

Thanks guys ! Got the cover/cap and wheel off. I assume the shaft needs to rotate forward ?

OK, Still fighting this. I don't see any way to see the key, so I don't know where it is at as far as lining up to come out. Can someone tell me which way I need to pull/push the handle ? How far ?

Will try to help, othyer wise pm me and i can email more.
Looking at your photo the handle is on the inside of the housing, the wood ruff/ half moon key is under the brake handel pin and mated in the toggle. So, you can see the bronze bushing inside the housing, remove the spring, and adjustment nut. Push the adjusting screw until it comes out of the hole in the toggle. Then tap from the inside on the pin in the handle to push the pin and handle out, if the woodruff key is tight in the handle pin with force and lubricant it should slide out of the toggle and take that outside bushing with it. once the bushing, pin and handle are all the way out the toggle and brake band should comeout easily. I could copy my blue parts mannual that has the parts numbered and listed that should show you where the parts are and i could email that if you want. Good luck the I&T mannualls make it sound easy. That woodruff key does show in your drawing just under the arrow from the lever assembly it is just a small dark rectangle. Tractorman  |
