My dad and I went this weekend to pick up my first tractor: an Allis Chalmers "CA". We left Saturday afternoon and got back Sunday afternoon, it was a 400 mile round trip. The tractor runs great, engine was overhauled a couple years ago. Needs paint, along with other things, but nothing that can't be fixed. One price of a part that really shocked me was the Traction Booster gauge, $99 or more anywhere we looked! I need help, though. The steering has quite a bit of wobble back and forth. Is there any sort of adjustment on the gearboxes?
Thanks, JarrodACFan http://s1168.photobucket.com/albums/r485/JarrodACFan/Allis%20Chalmers%20CA/ Edited by JarrodACFan - 04 Mar 2012 at 6:52pm |

Congratulations ! The CA is a great little tractor. She'll do more than most folks think. First thing is to get a manual. It will show you where the adjustments are and how to do them.

Since they want to remove Liberty,
Shouldn't they be called "Regressives"? |

Well try this, If you will hold the curser over the picture on your photobucket picture there will menu come up with 4 white boxes the last one says IMG code. left click in it and watch carefully you will see the word "copied" come up then go to your post and right click where you want the picture and click on paste and it will inter it in the post. If you are posting more than one photo be sure to hit enter between each or they will be placed accross the page instead of below one another.

2 questions 1st---How old are you young man?
2nd---Who is the lucky lady that will get the first ride? Great pictures. We don't have a CA on the farm yet. Yet. Congrats to you. Seeing you sitting atop all that power makes me think ZZ Top might have to rewite their song," Women Go Crazy For A Sharp Dressed Man---That Drives A Tractor".

On your steering i hope it will adj the slop out.. I did a C once and it was ok in center but tight when turing left and right. Took side grinder and ground teeth on each end of rooster comb , worked real smooth. Not as much wear on L and R as in center.

Nice looking tractor, late CA with snapcouple. I've got a 55 just like it. The steering can have 2 problems. In the gear box or in the pedestal. If you turn the steering wheel, watch to see if the side arm moves without any slop. If it is tight then look at the front wheel as you turn the steering wheel. If the steering wheel moves the arm but not the front wheels, then you problem is in the pedestal. There are shims in there that will tighten it up. There is also some adjustment in the gear box. You need to get 3 manuals, operators, service, and parts, then you can fix anything thats needed. LOL Bob |

My CONGRATULATIONS!!! That is one NEAT Late model CA.
There are three eccentrics on the steering box that can be adjusted to help. Do not repeat not do any work till you have a manual in hand That is one adjustment that drove me NUTS! Again very nice late model CA. Sounds like the hand clutch works .Good Luck! Bill Long |

Wi9pe that grin off your face young man. Looks like you got a very good CA. Steering fix shouldn't pose too much a problem. As has been stated, make sure you get some manuals before tackling it. You could cause more damage if you go about it wrong. Good luck. God Bless.

I'm not sure about Portland, have never been before. Is there any cost to take a tractor? I'm not even sure if it will be done in time...

congrats.are in order.it really makes me have a feeling of accomplishment to see the younger generation getting one of these old tractors and restoring it.i ave always said it is a real shame that they cannot talk and express their days of use and abuse.1 am 73 years young and have several wd-45,s,both gas and diesel.this forum is a real good source of information.just remember there is no such thing as a STUPID QUESTION.you did not know how to walk till you was taught.......

While a neat gadget, the TB guage is not neccessary to get good use of the TB system at least on a WD45. Don't know the lever setup on on a CA so can't tell you how it works but on a WD/WD45 you just move the lift lever up a little to get "the effect". The more you raise the lever the more it will lift the implement out of the "draft". What I'm saying is,watching the needle isn't anymore helpful than just "feeling" what's going on. Too much slipping means you need more Traction Booster.

you can get a 5000 psi pressure guage and it will tell you the same thing once you learn to read it.also will tell you of the hydraulic system condition...steve is right,if it starts slipping, pick your lever a tad...
