Went out to start the 1959 D-17 to plow snow this morning, and problems. I am terrible with electrical, so here's what happened. Turned the key, saw a couple sparks come from the right side, but didnt seem to be from the starter, I think more in front and above. Now nothing. Sometimes a click or two. I think the battery is good, but charging it now. I've been running it on and off all fall, and ran it yesterday to plow snow. Ran fine. It's not real cold out, maybe 30 to 35. Stored inside.
What do I do??? Calling for feet of snow starting tomorrow off the end of Lake Ontario. |

Look her over good and find what sparked. Tighten the loose connections or replace the shorted part (take the ground off the battery while you do it!) You will find it. Just go over it wire by wire till you find where the smoke/sparks got out!

Maybe the battery connections? I'd clean and retighten them first; then check all the connections from the battery to the starter.

Dunno if you would see the sparks from loose battery terminals if yer RH hood is on. Maybe the solenoid wires are loose?

When you turn the key to start, does it "click" at all? First I would clean off any corrosion on the battery terminals. If it still won't crank, and you hear it click when trying to start, do a voltage drop test. Checking for voltage drop is a simple test done with a volt meter. Start at the battery, put one probe on the battery post, the other at the first connection and try cranking the engine. If you get more than .2 volt reading on the meter, you have too much resistance between the 2 probes. You will find the cause by doing this simple test one section at a time.
This same test can be used on any electrical system like a light or motor that doesn't work. If the solenoid isn't working, you can do the same things to figure out what is wrong. |

Obviously, Mother Nature is at it again! With things getting wet on your tractor from plowing snow, moisture got into a connection somewhere on board the tractor. The reason for the spark. As Brian mentioned, take one section at a time and troubleshoot. You'll find the culprit! Don't forgit' to check your grounds to! That's just as important.
