When grading/maintaining your driveway what do you use? I have a 3pt blade and a 3pt box scraper but neither one are that great at removing washboards. Some kind of a pull type grade would be better but also wondering about one of these. Any input?

You may laugh but from the mid60,s to about 2000 used our D 15 Series 2 and a snap coupler blade .
Now we use a 3 pont blade .
I have a half mile driveway .. the key is putting the road in right and maintaining it

For years we maintained our church parking lot,about 4 acres, with a AGCO box blade we purchased new for the job and by adjusting the top link shorter it would either easily cut washboards out or kind of ride on top and knock down the high spots if we lengthened it out a bit. Mostly loose 1/2" limestone.
For loose stone the drags that are similar to a H-D chain link fence work very well but you cant kep the crown in a single lane drive with one. Sounds like you might need a WC patrol or D grader??

i have used a GRADE-MASTER alot i love it!!! i worked for the MO. DEPT. OF TRANS. FOR 33 YRS. we had a 8ft. one you can do so much with it.if i had alot of gravel rd. to take care of i would have one.the only thing i would say is you need a 80+ hp tractor and pref. a 4wheel drive. Tom

I use fwa 8030+rhino 1540 10ft blade....it'll cut darn near anything! sometimes more than I want!!

I took 2-6' AC sc blades and had a welding shop make me a 10' blade. Used it on a WD45 for years. Now, I made a "T" out of 5"x7" tube. With AC brackets from a planter, the "T" mounts to the 3pt on my 7045PS. I made two plates out of 3/4 steel, drilled 4 holes and welded them to the back end of the "T". The back half of the sc blade bolts in these plates. So now my 7045 has a sc AC blade. The "T" is long enough so I can turn the blade 360* without hitting the tractor. I can tip the blade with the tractor 3pt arms or the adjusting wheel of the blade.

Haven't found anything that works better than this bucket.....
I used to use a landscape rake to work up the gravel, but it is slow and no down pressure. I sometimes push a back blade in reverse to do finishing touches after the skidloader.

Neither one of the tools in picture will keep the crown in the lane you need to keep water from laying in a grave driveway.I have a small excavation business and use a 7ft box scrape but my compact 4710's have hydraulic cylinders in the 3pt so I can tilt side to side and in and out on the go.

I hang suitcase weights on my 8 ft blade turn it as far as you can to one side go both ways till you have a windrow , straiten the blade and fan it out pushing backwards ( much like a county truck would do ) that takes out the washboard for me

The farmer who lived across the street from me had a 500' long driveway,gravel and perfect! Every Sunday, after church, he'd go up and down about 10 times, pulling a big old beam and a section of heavy chain link fence.Seemed it took just long enough to get the tractor good and warmed up and have the misses make lunch !The old guy knew a few things ! Farmed that 50 acres for over 60 years.Best bean growing soil in southern Ontario.
Now the 'new' guy( NOT a farmer,rents the land to a jerk) complains all year then gets a load of gravel in ,just before winter, pushes 1/2 over to my side of the road when he snowplows....I give up telling how it should be done.....

In our driveway we could just use a beach master with a beach cleaner  . Little different soil here. I have also witnessed some good results with the grade master. We normally use a 45 with sc blade and the extensions on it. Does a great job. Once in a while we use a wd with a box blade to move some sand that has washed down. May be a slight overkill (but lots of fun) we'll let the the AC M-100B do the work.

I use my Glenco field cultivator with a spike leveler behind on the shop drive. By spring it has chuck holes from the semi traffic. I dig it as deep as the deepest chuck hole when I see we will have several dry days in the forcast. I then float back blade several times and then drive the tractor or big truck up and down the drive to pack it back down.

yes you can put crown in the road with the GRADE-MASTER once you get on to running it you can do alot with it' i have used one on 500+ mi. of road.like i said if i had alot of gravel road i would own one.

I have a '53 JD 40C crawler. Angle the blade and back up leaving the windrow in the middle of the driveway. Can adjust how much wiindrow with the down pressure. A round trip has it looking pretty good. And you have wiped the crawler tracks away as you go. Also quite effective for those wet heavy snow storms, but that's another story.

I use a D14 (or WD) with a box scraper. I added about 200 pound to the scraper. It gets to job done.

Our 400 ft. gravel drive from highway to farm shop was a never ending problem. After every hard rain we had to fill ditches that were eroded in it and then deal with potholes in the winter months. Finally after fighting it for 25 years,I talked my dad in to blacktopping it. It cost alot,but it was worth every dollar spent.

But what about when it comes time to seal it or fix potholes, black top is nice but not trouble free either.

Our gravel drive is about 400 feet long. I used to grade it with a 7' three point scraper. a few years ago, I had a local contractor add about a foot of garvel and topped it with 4" of recycled asphalt (the stuff they mill off the highways). He graded it with a JD 450, rolled it and we have done nothing more. It is the cheapest and best alternative to hot mix asphalt. It can be regraded but I'm gonna add another 2 or 3 inches in a few years, grade that and roll it. Hot mix asphalt is nice, would have cost me more than $10,000 and in ten years I would have to do it again.

Claus,you are right. Nothing is trouble free,but I can have it sealed with a truck (sprayed on) every two years for what I was spending on rock in a two year period. Gravel is just a high maintenance driveway most of the time and snow removal is almost impossible without removing some rock. I still have some gravel drives on the farm,it's just this one drive is the most used and is on slight incline. It cost too much for the blacktop,but it sure has made life a little easier.

An old boss of mine took care of a 1/4 mile long drive to an old family cemetary in So. Illinois. He found best thing was a section of big I- beam about 8 feet long.By big I mean 8"X 24". He would hang weights on one side and would always keep the weighted side near the ditch. Worked well, would always pull some gravel towards middle.
