With gas prices what they are and where the may go, is there any really good, economical fuel stabilizers out there that won't break the bank and actually keep gas fresh for 6 months?  Or after it starts to get old (loss of octane) is there a good product to get the octane back up?

I have never had any fuel related problems and I have never used any kind of stabilizer.  I don't think I believe any of that   .....but I could very well be full of beans.

Stabil works. It's what's in my gas tractors and lawnmowers.

I use Stabil and I can tell it works. It don't take gas very long to go bad anymore. I keep stabil in the mowers and tractors. I drive the vehicles enough that they don't need it.

I like Sea Foam. I have had gas in tractors that was 2 years old and they started and ran fine.

I try to freshen it up every year anyway.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I heard that fuel additives only protect the gaskets and any rubber parts in the carb. Gas goes really downhill in terms of volatility after a very short time. I've started things with "old" gas before and never had a problem. Ryan

I work as A mechanic in A honda---yamaha motorcycle dealership . I do alot of carb work on machines where nothing is used or stabil was added .  We use  marvel mystery oil. Gas keeps longer, no startup problems in the spring and is upper cylinder lube.  I use it in my shop at home also--helps get stuck engines free.

I think my tractor starts in maybe less than one revolution with no additives.

How would I tell if the additive worked?

The problem that i was haveing is the carbs would get gunget up if they set without being run for long periods of time. I tried to only run non alcohal gas and i did not run them dry. I added sea foam and that took care of the carb gunk.
Now that i can't get gas without alcohal I try to run the carb dry when i put them away. The carb on the 25-40 E holds so much gas that it can run for up to 5 minutes before uses up all the gas in the carb. Sea Foam claims to keep the alcohal blends stable so far i have no reason not to believe there claim.

I don't use any fuel stabilizer either. I add dry gas everytime I put fuel in. Seems to work quite well. No gunk in the fuel system at all...

If possible drain the carb and fuel system before storage.
Some places (in Minn anyway) carry a non-oxygenated (no-alcohol) gas they sell for marine, classic automobiles, snowmobile/atv, and other off road engines. I use it in all the engines that I store for an extended period of time. My chain saws (and other 2-cycle engines) run happier with this fuel and the carbs (and fuel lines) stay cleaner. The carbs and fuel systems on the 4 cyle engines stay clean over the storage period (I drain the tanks and add a few gallons on No-Ox gas and run the engine until it reaches operating temp to ensure the No-Ox fills the carb and fuel system.
Have also tried Stabil and Sea foam in the past, but can't say that it, or draining the carbs/fuel lines and running the engine before storage, did the trick.

My experience with stabil is it works but is damn hard on some components of the older systems, specifically cork gaskets, some of the older plastics etc.  And if a person is sloppy about how much he uses (as in make sure you use plenty) the damage multiplys quickly. I wont use it anymore in anything old but use the CORRECT amount in newer stuff like mowers. Most 2 stroke oils have it added and i use nothing in my saws and weed eaters. I drain them and run them out of fuel. Also be very careful about spilling Stabil on nice shiny paint or you will have nice flat paint.

Unless someone talks me out of it I am going to treat the gas barrel with Lucas upper cylinder lube - fuel stabilizer. Fairly economical at $50 a gal which will treat 426 gal. I think Lucas products are good as a rule of thumb.
