Well found out why the PD Lever on the neighbors D17 just flops around and doesn't work. I pulled the collar out in 3 pieces. Guess I'll be splitting it here soon to fix it after I get the front end back on. Anybody know why it would do this? He said the PD always worked great until one day it wouldn't change from high to low. Been this way for 15yrs or so.

We found a good used collar on the net this afternoon and he went ahead and bought it. Looks like there is some damage to the clutch shifter as well. I will see more about it when I split it I guess.

Have you tried to go in through the side cover hole? There is enough room to slip the fork in through the hole. Now that I think about it though, the collar that the brass rides on might have issues. I ran into that on my replacement clutch. Had to rob the one off the original unit.

Yeah after looking at it again the piece that the collar clamps to is badly damaged also. Still trying to figure out what happened.

Maybe the piece on the side of the torque tube that limits the travel of the PD handle was mis- adjusted and he was pushing it to hard to get to the lock on that piece and it finally snapped the collar.

Try to go in through the small side cover. Some mechanics have successfully done this on a D 15 and replaced the shuttle collar.

Part # 70236409 clutch collar is broke and Part # 71003771 clutch shifter is broke. I removed the PD handle today. He was able to find a clutch collar and bought it but he can't find a clutch shifter.

It only takes about 30 minutes with the right jacks and stands to spit, will save you hours through the access hole.
Only extra part is a gasket.  plus you can really clean all the debris an gunky oil out of the housing.
Just my thoughts

I didn't figure it would be to bad to split it. The housing needs to be cleaned out real good...its nasty. Just hope we can find the last part that he needs.
I have the front end off right now...just got the engine back in last week after putting in new throw-out bearing, pilot bearing, and rear main seal. Along with cleaning out alot of sludge from the rear main seal leaking everywhere. Don't have the timing cover back on yet..gasket still ain't here.

It seems like it takes forever for parts to come after they are ordered.

Maybe you should try another dealer, I use a dealer in KS, and they stock a lot of the D17 parts, and many other of the older allis.  They are actually noted for keeping older stuff in stock, so they sell a lot of it too.

I should probably correct the 30 min. estimate :-), more of an exaggeration really, but in reality, I have split one at that joint in an hour if I have all the tools, the stand right there ready to go, and you don't run into any stubborn bolts.  All you have to do is pull the foot rests, the hydro lines, the snap coupler bell pin on the top, disconnect the snap coupler release, the internals you already have apart, and split.  This is from memory, but I think that is everything.

FYI if you didn't already know...
If it has a wide front put some wedges in above the axle and pivot block so it can't tip left or right. Place a jack just behind the clutch on the flat spot of the torque tube and jack just enough to put some tension on it. Then put a long pipe over the PTO and roll the back half away. It will be front heavy and the pipe helps balance the rear. That is of course after you have done all that Orange mentioned.
